I'm looking for one of the following.

- Ocean Front Wood Heated Cabin
- Fire Tower that can be rented overnight (w/heat)
- other cabin with great views (wood heated)
- other unique place to stay for a couple of nights.

and yes we are looking for a nice romantic private 2 night stay. She's not big on hiking and really not big on winter hiking.

Yurt

Along the Northville Lake Placid Trail there was a cozy, romantic yurt for rent. I went to get the link and it seems a family loss has caused them to stop renting. There is another place in the Adirondacks that rents yurts. The website looks good, but I have no personal experience with it, whereas the other I knew was a good recommendation. You can check it out though: Yurt Rentals
Good luck.

BrentD22,

I've been in your situation and I've been married for over 30yrs. If you have the time and cash forget the cabins in the Northeast. Do a google for some resort in the virgin island (passport not needed). Or any warm weather area with ocean beach. I sure your wife would love it. Good luck.

I don't have the info with me, but there's a lighthouse on Lake Ontario that's available for rent. It's in a state park west of Rochester. I'll try to find the info and post it for you.

Savoy Mountain State Park in western MA. 4 cabins for rent(#2 has the best view of the pond) Wood stove, outhouse,no water,no electricity. It's a great place, but really rustic.
Cabin #4 is bigger, and has electricity, but you have to book way ahead.
Cabin #2 is not available in 2 weeks-it's taken! :)

It really depends on what time of year, and what kind of budget you have,as there are a lot of choices.
Some other interesting choices
Nantucket Lightship on Rowes Wharf is now a B&B.
Great deals at the Westin Copley for an "urban hiking" experience.Shopping, theatres, restaurants, all inside.

The Notchland INN at Harts Location NH, right outside Barlett...opposite Davis Path in Crawford Notch.
Dr Bemis who knew the Crawfords had this small "Castle" built and I believe part of it incorporates a portion of their original structure.
Very high end $$ but you can get as comfy, cozy as you want...out door hot tub or Jacuzzi in some of the rooms if you want.
Excellent if your a bit of a history buff. Harts Location has a population of about 20 people give or take. The Mt Washington Hotel is a few miles further up the Notch.

The Balsms further north is one of the Grand hotels from days gone by, very beautifull.

As is the Mt Washingington Hotel however the views are being continually diminished as it expands it's Bretton Woods ski slopes condo stuff.
"Picture pretty" though just the same

I think of these as winter destinations though they are all open year round

This came up a few months ago from another member... he ended up at The Wawbeek looking for romantic and loved it!! Turn of the century Great Camp with plenty to do.

Also, look around at private places for rent. Here's one in the Lake Placid area -- one bedroom cottage. Be as remote as you wish, or bring it into Lake Placid for ice skating, dog sledding, ski touring, bob-sledding, tobogganing, shopping and dining. ;)

Cabin rentals are available in NYS Parks -- rustic with fireplaces (VT, NH and ME the same?). Not sure how fancy you care to be from your wish list.

We went there for our anniversary last year. Pricey. Don't know how it would be in winter. In Fall it was spectacular.

Agreed, can be pricey but they also have some great specials and its a one of a kind place. The indoor ice skating looks nice! On the non-hiking-wife plus side, the Vanderbilt and Roosevelt Mansions as well as the Culinary Institute of America are nearby and make great day trips.

Also, I agree with DanSunRa; the US Virgin Islands are a great getaway. I went to St Thomas USVI for four days midwinter a few years ago. A ferry to the Island of St John (which is also a US National Park) makes for an amazing day of gentle hiking and swimming in some of the most amazing waters.

How nice of you to plan such a wonderful trip for your wife!!!!

Wife with non-hiking husband ...

We spent two (expensive) nights at the Mirror Lake Inn last year. Our room had a view of Mirror Lake and the MacIntyres. And we skated on the Olympic oval--with a view of the Sewards. And the food was phenomenal--so was the hot tub.

We did take a short snowshoe hike at the VIC at Paul Smiths. All in all, a very nice trip.

Agree with Mohonk. A great place in the heart of the ADK High Peaks is the Elk Lake Lodge.
If you don't mind travelling, think about the Lake O'Hara Lodge and dream.

Elk Lake Lodge is open only from sometime in May to sometime in (I believe) October. It is not a luxurious place to stay: "cozy" in its way, but the accomodations and dining style are not for everyone or to everyone's tastes. Rowboats and canoes are made available to guests, who have access to both Elk Lake and Clear Pond. There is a resident population of loons on those EL and CP during the summer. Other waterfowl and wildlife for watching, too.
