My hiking buddy and I climbed the NH 48 last year, are working on the 67 in NE and would like to snag the hundred highest in NE. BUT bagging the 100 highest means we have to bushwhack and I haven't done any orienteering since I went to Outward Bound in 1972. Do any of you have recommendations of Map and Compass workshops that will be held in New England this Fall? I really don't want to be defeated by trailless peaks, but I know that my current map and compass skills won't get me there and back safely.

Thanks for any help!

Pat

Check out the REI web site, they always offer courses in map and compass navigation, the instructors are very good and they give practical hands on field exercises.

If you do the REI class, I HIGHLY encourage you to take the $35 classroom/field exercise combo option, which includes a class in the field after the lesson in the classroom. I only did the $20 classroom lesson and I still feel like I haven't "got it".

This is being run by the Boston chapter of the AMC:

Fri-Sun Sep. 28-30 Map & Compass Instructional Workshop. Teaches basic skills for off-trail navig., incl. intentional bushwacking and emerg. route finding. No off-trail experience necessary. Bring a compass. Cost $65, incl. food/lodging at Harvard Cabin (near Pinkham Notch, NH) & instructional materials. CLs Bryan Hall, Robyn Churchill and Mohamed Ellozy. Reg. after 8/15 w/L Joe Comuzzi (978-448-9837; [email protected]).

Orienteering Clubs

Why not try some of the local orienteering clubs like New England Orienteering Club (www.neoc.org)?

p2piper - We've had two people cancel from our group going to the free course in Westminster MA (see earlier post) this Saturday 8/18. If you'd like to join us, drop me a PM with your email address so I can send you the instruction and requirements sheet that they've sent us. It sounds like a thorough class. It includes both classroom and fieldwork. I've heard other people speak well of it.

So far, the group is Cantdog, Rocksnrolls, and myself.

Dugan, thanks for letting me know. I would defintely come but have a softball tournament next weekend and I can't let my team down. I'm their center fielder and team nutcase. I'll keep looking. Let me know what you think of the course.

Thanks,

Pat
