That's a good read, Rick. The Mass. section of the AT doesn't have the best views by any means, but it can't be beat this time of year for the color! I will never forget a couple of years ago I was staying the night at the October Mountain Shelter. It was just a little campout in the backyard. I spent the evening talking with a man and woman from Colorado. They came to the Berkshires to see the foliage, which they described as outstanding. I questioned their reasoning for leaving Colorado to see foliage. They told me about the lack of color in the western woods in the fall. That made home seem a little more precious.

It is a lot of fun to talk with the thru hikers at the Cumbys in Dalton, as they talk of their trials, and their first chance to eat an ice cream in a long time. Ah to be young and have the time to do the AT!

Wahoo! I'm so stoked USA Today picked this up. This was an assignment I gave to our Springfield correspondent -- and he was just stoked to get to be camping/hiking out in the woods for several days and get paid for it to boot!

If anyone else sees the piece in another newspaper, I'd love to hear about it.

Alpinista, your article made the front page of today's Berkshire Eagle, with a complimentary article about a rash of recent hiking injuries in the Berkshires. Most prominent was about a 100 ft. fall a woman from Arizona took off of Monument Mnt.. She's in critical condition, sad to say!
