Trail to from register to cairn mostly ice. Also lots of running water but rock hopping was easy. The slide was exceptionally loose with gravel, cobbles, and small boulders all at their maximum angle of repose. It was about half covered with spines of frozen snow, soft enough for good grip w/ spikes an/or kicking steps. It wasn't too bad going up, but coming down was dicey. We hugged the mud and trees along the right side mostly. The whole climb was easy microspiking except for 20-30 minutes descending the slide where the cost of a slip would have been painful. The only tiresome part was the slog on the unpaved road from the trailhead to the gate. Those two miles were long. By late afternoon it had gotten soft and muddy. All in all, it was a wonderful climb on a bluebird day. We zoned out on top for 40 minutes, delighting in solitude with a gorgeous view, warm sun, and silence.
