Forecast sounded good so I decided to hike this trio. Route Appalachia-Short Line-King Ravine via Subway- Gulfside- Madison- back to Hut- Starr Lake Tr- Adams- Lowes- Gulfside- Jefferson via loop tr.- back to Edmands Col- Randolph Path- Shortline- Appalachia.
I've been wanting to go up King Ravine for a while and decided to go and make the drive worth it and knock out all three of the northern most Presis. I went of Starr Lake Tr. because I like the scrambling near the top. Madison had decent views but looking towards Adams was obscured. The clouds were kicking around 5500 feet. The last couple hundred vert up Adams put me in the clouds. Occasionally I would get a 5 second view from the summit but the clouds were there to stay with some serious gusts. Heading down Lowes and over Gulfside I stayed in the clouds until I started to drop near Edmands Col. The clouds seemed to drop a little lower but the views into the Great Gulf were good and short peeks of Jefferson were had. By the time I got up Jefferson I still was in the clouds. Jefferson was by far the busier of the three peaks, almost crowded. As I returned to Edmands Col views of Adams became more frequent but never consistent. I was surprised at how slowly the Randolph path descends. Nice views were had towards the Castle and Castle Ravine and glimpses of Jefferson while still above treeline.
I didn't get the clear summits but I did get a nice surprise. Not to far before I reached the Short Line on the way down, something bound down the trail then into the woods. It looked weasely. I got my camera ready and looked in the woods and up a tree was a marten. (I have a pic on the thread under New England Q and A: Is This a Marten)
Another oddity I saw. A guy on Jefferson backpacking with a Patagonia shell but wearing jeans. Usually people on the Presis in jeans aren't wearing Patagonia. He looked like a newbie. He also had a North Face Tent that looked like it was big enough for 3 people and 8lbs (he was alone)
I am the Tomcat goo goo g'joob
