I'm trying to plan my trip for next weekend...
We plan on driving up thursday night, which would put us at Heart Lake around 9:30ish. I was wondering if you guys think i would be able to get a Leanto late at night. Is anyone here heading up to Marcy dam that night that wouldnt mind a couple of late arrivals? It would be very beneficial to us to get into the dam on thursday, which would give us a jump on friday.

Thanks

I always start my backpacking trips on thursday night. I have yet to not get a lean-to. Now if it were friday, it would be a slim chance. Go the extra 1/2 mile to Cagel Lean-to, it's a little harder to find at night, but it's very secluded and quiet, trust me, it's worth the extra.

Tote Road

You might be better off hiking in on the old tote road after dark from South Meadows. Its much easier on the feet and no tree roots to contend with like there is from the Loj. I agree with peak stay at the Cagel Lean-to! You should not have a problem on a Thursday night :)

Happy Trails and Good Luck!

Oops just realized it is Friday....lol Percius I hope you found your way :)

Yeah, we are planning on taking the Jeep road in. We are leaving
next weekend so....

Which Shelter is the the Cagel Lean-to? Is that the one between marcy dam and avalanche pass? I never know the names of these things.

Oh, and I kind of wanted to stay at marcy dam, because my buddy has never been up to the dax, so I thought it would be cool if we woke up at marcy dam, great views of Wright, Avalanche, and Colden. Any fish in the Dam headwaters? (Its the free fishing weekend for NY)

Percius as you approach Marcy Dam from the tote road go over the bridge at the dam. This will be on your right hand side. You will soon see a trail to the left you cannot miss it. There are 3 lean-to's over there. Two close ones and then one further back. I believe this is the one peak-bgr is talking about. It is very secluded and very nice. I would check that one out! Yes there are brookies in Marcy Dam and the stream that enters the small mud hole.....:D In the past I have had very good luck fishing there. Have a great trip and I want to hear your fish stories and hiking expierence......
