Steve and I hiked up to Mount Hale
upon a frozen post-holed trail
On Zealand Road while sittin'
I lost a down mitten
If you find it, please send it by mail.

;)

There once was a man named McRat
Who typed at the screen where he sat
He seemed to be workin'
Even when he was lurkin'
on websites, or online for chat.

But no screen potato was he
Not only his mind wandered free
Each chance that he could
He'd wander the wood
"48? That's too easy for me!"

While scrolling the pages of Trip Reports,
I come upon one a little out of sorts.
Its written by a man called McRat,
who known for long reports, it's not excatly that.

In fact!
it's short and sweet but it certainly fits in
for poor McRat has lost his mittens!

T'was once a lass named Leaf,
Who ne'er was considered a thief.

For the Jets she did root,
We thought it was a hoot,

When they choked and she came unto grief!

:D

On a website devoted to far treks
Whose members know odd words like "fartleks"
I still shouldn't sigh
That Tom didn't try
To rhyme the impossible "nartreb"

I did know a lad named Tom once,
who wanted to cause a slight fuss
over a football team i held dear
and whose loss i did fear.

Because of the numerous New England fans,
which makes sense, my foot is upon their lands.
But i remain confused by Mr. Tom Rankin,
it is true, yes, he resides south of Kingston?!

;)

Yes, but I seem to remember a team with GIANTS on their uniforms won the Superbowl last year, and it appears as though they are actually IN the playoffs this year again! :D

Your saga, while short, is not sweet.
A frozen post-hole is no treat.
At least you had Steve
To divert and relieve
You of any false sense of defeat.

To that, add the loss of your mitten.
With bereavement you surely are smitten.
Yet Tom, Leaf and Nartreb
Mock your grief on the Web -
Some posts would be better unwritten.

McRat did Mt Hale,
The trail was very frozen,
Steve came along too.

A down mitten lost on Mt Hale?
You must search for that Holy Grail!
For a mitten alone
Will freeze hand to the bone
And cause your peakbag attempts to fail.

FYI:
McRat is a friend named Russ
Whose Towel has made quite a fuss
When 48 it does try
Hope is that, so will I
No hiking has me big as a bus!
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

You've heard of the mitten lost walkin'
and the verses that got people talkin'.
But there on the ground
what was lost has been found
by that hiking machine called Ed Hawkins!

So let us all raise a loud cheer
for the rescuer of my mitten so dear.
Hip! Hip! Hooray!
for the news made my day
and to all a Happy New Year!

I don't see anything keeping the original and the sequal out of Appalachia...this is true art. Simply beautiful words....
