Since several people on this forum kayak the mid to lower Hudson, I am curious what your insight is on this. I launch on the river anywhere from south of Albany to Cold Spring. More so in the Coxsackie to city of Hudson region. How is the water quality for immersion and rolling? I am aware that the DEC is planning on re-introducing some swimming beaches on the river so perhaps that is favorable info. I am also aware that using nose plugs, ear plugs, and goggles on any questionable water helps avoid contaminants and bacteria. That does take the fun out of spontaneous rolling however!

Based on the amt of garbage I see washed up on the shorelines, I'm not sure if I would want to make it a habit of immersing myself in the hudson. It's probably not as bad as it was years ago but it's not Poland Springs either. :)

Maybe in more of a flowing water on the ebb tide? :)

The quality of the water in the Hudson River can vary quite a lot.
Right after a heavy rain, the river can look and smell dirty. Unfortunately, this comes from storm drains and even sewage systems being overwhelmed.
Towns along the Hudson have come a long way in treating their effluent, but occasionally there is still a big discharge of raw stuff.
Brown foam on the water is not a good sign.

I swim in the river often. There are nice beaches in the Coxsackie-Stuyvesant area. Not right after a heavy rain, though. It usually is pretty clean from July on. And surprisingly warm.

I have a friend with a sailboat who sails the Hudson, starting from the Rondout Creek in Kingston. He, and I and many others have often taken a dip off the boat with no ill effects. This will often be while anchored in the area around Port Ewen. I will keep in mind Trudy's comments about the effects soon after heavy rain.

P.S. Don't ask Spongebob what he thinks of the Hudson.
