A favorite bit of trivia is that the Mahoosucs is the longest stretch of the AT north of the Smokies with no roads of any kind (public or private). The Maine sections may feel wilder, but there are private logging roads that intersect the trail more often.

Sounds like a great trip despite the rain.I had to bail on a Mahoosuc backpack earlier this year and I'm dying to get up there.

oh the sickness....only you would notice that!

actually it was one of the other members of the trip that pointed out the hole. That person will remain nameless - but it was not a guy. hardy har har....
women are just a sick as men - just hide it better and "dress up the words" better. hardy har har.

We encountered an awful stench about halfway through, which at first we thought was the lingering odor of the moose that had fallen in the notch last year (can the smell really last that long?? we wondered). Later, we found some of the moose’s bones,

When 4 of us went thru the Notch July of '07 the moose had recently died (or been euthanized) and was lying curled up in a way that made it seem cute and asleep. There were flies buzzing around but no stench yet.

I can only imagine what AT thru-hikers endured as they slowly lugged their packs by the poor animal!

About four years ago in early May there was a dead moose on the AT just below the South Crocker Summit, it took up the entire trail. Fortunatley, it was stilll partially frozen when I had to get around it!

Excellent TR. I missed some fun! I'd love to hike the Mahoosics. Mabye next time. Just had surgery on my knee, and these TRs are keeping me going!
Thanks for posting.
Sandy

The Mahoosics were literally my backyard growing up. Goose Eye my first NEHH summit, Old Speck my first 4K. I can't even start to guess how many hours I've spent exploring the area between Berlin adn Page Pnd (particularly Trident Col). Glad you could enjoy it!

Carlo Col shelter is definitely one of the best out there IMHO.
