Yesterday marked my last big hike in New England for quite some time (though I might do Smarts on Friday). I took a visit up to the Presis with a bunch of my friends to tackle Monroe, and then take the Crawford Path to Eisenhower, then take the Edmunds Path back to our car. It looks like it was a beautiful day across most of New England, except up above treeline, the weather was less than desired, esp for July. Temps in the low to mid 40s...winds 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

The trip started along the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail

At the Gem Pool

Cascades

There were some views on the way up, but not great ones

After a grueling 3.5 hour climb up the trail (it was wet, slippery and the water was very high) we made it to the hut at 3pm. It seemed to be way too late to be taking the ridge down to Edmunds Path, but I didn't fancy the thought of climbing on my butt down the Ammy trail all over again. Then, by chance, I met two fellow Views from the toppers, Unadogger, and MichealJ

I asked if they could help us up to Monroe and partway down the Crawford Path, and they accepted. I was overjoyed that we were able to do that. A few minutes later, several other VFtT'ers came along. I think they were doing a Presidential Traverse. I remember meeting Bikehikefish, and LRiz, but I can't remember the rest of the names. But here is a group pic.

Before we left for Monroe I took a few more pics...

One of the Lakes

The Hut shrouded in fog

Now, it was onward and upward to Monroe. I must say, I am not in the shape as the viewsfromthetop power hikers. After about 5 min, I could feel the muscles ripping in my legs, so I had to hang back and take a slower trek up. No big deal. gives me time to take a pic.

And then, finally at the summit

continued in a min

Paaat' two

Monroe was my 34th 4k. At some point, I will finish the 4000 footers, unfortunately not for awhile, since I'm movin south.

Summit photo, with amazing views

Unadogger, MichealJ and the rest of my hiking group continued down towards the other bumps in Monroe and eventually Franklin. After that, we exchanged our goodbyes and they were off. A big thanks to both of them for giving me a little more confidence to do that ridge hike!! By now, the views were slowly trying to open.

The views were on and off, though the lower our elevation was, the better the views became. After some nice walking, we got closer to the Eisenhower area, and the views opened up for the rest of the hike.

My fav pic

We climbed down the Edmunds Path and it was wet, muddy, and a bit slippery. But it was NOWHERE near what the Ammy trail was. Near the end, we saw a nice sun beginning to set.

And by the time we got back to the original car at the Ammy trail, the Presidentials were just about totally in the clear.

Hope you like the pics. And it was great to meet everyone up at Lakes. Hope your respective hikes went well!!

Nice report, at least the weather tended to break for you, however, it carries a shadow of sadness, how far south will you have to move? Out of NH?

Excellent TR. It was great that you got to hike with so many friends and fellow mountain enthusiasts. After you move, will you come up at least once a year to vacation?

Moving to VA. The good news...there are the Blue Ridge Mtns and West Virginia. The bad news; they aren't the Whites. Ah well, moving to live with my girlfriend is worth it.

I sure hope so! I'm coming up in Oct for a wedding, but not sure how long I will be around. If I can get up there during winter, I wouldn't mind doing a winter 4k or two.

Isn’t that often the way it is! Must be some sort of corollary to Murphy’s Law.

You picked a nice one for your last hike in the Whites for awhile.
I’m looking forward to TRs from you as you explore the area surrounding your new home in Virginia.

Nice TR and photos, Phil. Nice to meet you too. Yes, we were doing the Presi Traverse (I'll write a TR later) and it was in the clouds until Franklin and the col with Ike. Then Ike cleared just as we were starting down and it was nice until the end. The view from Jackson showed only George still wearing the white wig.

On your photo:

we have (back, L-R) Larry (nhhillrider), me (BikeHikeSkiFish), you, Michael J, and Ed (Old Man)
and in front the lovely ladies Sabrina (Una_Dogger), Larisa (LRiz), and Chris (Wenzell)

Have fun in VA!

She does hike, right?

Awwww.....

It was great to meet you! We had a wonderful time hiking along with your group. We had been plodding along in the fog, MJ, Terra and I for several miles and it was good to have your company and the enthusiasm of your group was great!

Here's wishing you good luck, health, joy and prosperity down in them thar Blue Ridge hills -- please climb Mt Rogers for me and take some of your excellent photos to share with us all here!

:)

Wasn't it just awesome when the skies opened up?? I have to say that I did appreciate the fog hiking, little things along the trail that go unnoticed during sunny days spring to life when one hikes in the fog. I felt as though I was hiking along the Moors all day -- it was a peaceful experience; and although the skies were foreboding, the climate along the ridge was actually quite settled and tame.

Again, thank you so much for helping us out a bit heading up Monroe. It was great to have met you and shared some "leisurely" hiking down the ridge. The fog definitely wasn't as bad as I thought it was, but when its already after 3pm and we had only made it to the hut, the last thing I wanted to do was get lost above treeline, so you guys definitely helped out with that worry!

I'll try to get into some hiking as much as possible, especially when the heat breaks this fall. Mt Rogers is on the list. I noticed a lot of the trails start at a very high elevation so there doesn't appear to be much climbing. I guess it will be an entire different experience.

BTW, we saw you on Edmunds Path as we came down below the cloudline, and I'm pretty sure we heard you yell!

That you waving?

She does hike, right?

She wants to...but has had several open heart surgeries in the past, along with a list of other ailments, so we are definitely limited. But any hike, walk, or drive we take in the woods has an extra special meaning so it is not a big deal. She says she wants to accompany me on a major hike. It worries me a lot, but I figure, if she can survive 3 open heart surgeries and a multitude of other ailments, then she would have no problem doing some hikes....with PROPER training.

Yup, that's me waving!!

Wow -- what an amazing trail that Edmund's Path!

First time for me on the section of Gulfside between Jefferson and the Cog, and the Westside, as well as Edmunds -- it was a day of redlining for us and it certainly was a treat when the sun came out!!!

I still can't get over how green everything is above treeline right now -- there must be over one inch of fluorescent green new growth on all the shrubs --- truly a beautiful hike, the fog made it more special in its own way!
