Moosilauke 2014-03-19 to finish all 48 in winter 2013-2014

Some of you may remember 2011-2012 when I got laid off and used that time to complete the single season winter 48. Fast forward two years and I found myself in the same boat, albeit this time with a nice severance package including salary and benefits. I guess there was some benefit to working for a ginormous corporation rather than a start-up. Anyway, I used the time off to re-do the single season, finishing today on Moosilauke, and I brought Gryffin (now that he's over a year old) along. This was his second winter peak and we were accompanied by (Karen) krobi and (Roberta) BernerBabe and her Berner Heidi. Gryffin and Heidi took a little while to adjust to each other while crammed in the back seat of my sedan, but once on the trails, they romped, frolicked and basically mauled each other, including most of the way up the summit cone. The weather that was forecast for this evening came a little early and we had 30-35MPH (gusts to 45+) winds and 15 degree temps. Both the dogs did fine.

Looks like Gryffin is going to be working on his 48. Congrats, compared to prior recent winters, a single season list this past winter was a lot more of effort.

My stipulation for getting him in the first place was that he be a hiking companion. So far, he has proven up to the task. And yes, this time through it was harder than in 2011-12 - much colder and windier and more snow. Definitely more trail breaking this year, although, conveniently, I did a substantial portion of the peaks during that 2-3 week window where we got no snow - Bonds + Zealand + Hale w/o putting on snowshoes for example. Carrigain last Friday was by far the hardest trail breaking, followed by Isolation right after the previous storm. By contrast, the Twins+Galehead and Owl's Head had sidewalks. Let me thank SteveR for breaking out Cabot because that would have seriously made my last two days challenging...

So you did all 48 in one season? I am so envious of all you you people that have all this time to do nothing but hike. I am lucky if I can get out every two weeks. Are you old or young? Rich or poor? Single or married? What is the secret?
I guess if you are 55 and need to work to support yourself, you only get to bag 2 or 3 peaks a season. I'll get my 48 by the time I reach 70,I hope. Whatever, I will keep on keeping on!

Hi Mike,

I too am chipping away at my winter 48 and as a new father find my time is even more limited than before. People used to ask me how long it would take to do an all season 48 or how I could find the time to catch over 100 stripers in a season. I am not single. Not too young, Not too old. Far from rich and I work more than some but not all.

There is no secret. Balancing what we need to do and what we want to do is tricky. Being able to make time for what you consider a priority is how we get to the places and chances in life that we ultimately find so rewarding. I can't pretend I know what forces pull you in different directions and I am not trying to tell you how to make this happen. All is can say is that if you make something a priority you eventually carve a piece of time for it.

My wife, god bless her, knows that my happiness ultimately adds to her happiness. I know that I am lucky in that respect. When my son is old enough to enjoy some of these adventures with me I know this will make the experience twice as enjoyable.

FWIW I hope you can find more time in your life for what makes you happy.

Z pretty much nailed it. Prioritize your life and you can reach your goals. In my case, both this year and two years ago, I "took advantage" of being laid off. With a wife and two kids, there wouldn't have been any other way to fit it in.
