I wouldn't normally write a trip report on what is little more than a short walk for most hikers but this one was really impressive for the views of Penobscot Bay, the islands, the harbor (it was the Windjammer Festival in Camden), and the nearby hills and countryside. After a summer of exploring a dozen national parks, monuments and other outdoor attractions out West, I never expected such a strong WOW! for such an easy hike.

We were on our way out of town when we decided to hike up the 1/2 mile, 800 ft. elevation gain, to Mt. Battie on the trail from Camden. About half way up we came out on open ledges and the views just got better from there. The summit was crowded as there is a road up. The trail can be a good scramble so don't take it for granted, especially on the way down with the distraction of the view before you.

The hike inspired me to go back to the Camden Hills for a longer hike and reminded me that I'm overdue hiking and paddling in Acadia.

Here is a link to a trail map for Camden Hills State Park.

Isn't it great little hike? Glad you made it up there. It's like the perfect tiny steep "experience Maine terrain in 30 minutes" hike. I hike it every time I am in town which is....lots. I hiked it at sunset this evening and had to hike down with a headlamp.

These are from sunset last weekend-ish:

I have about 8 gazillion more but these ones were most conveniently placed...we'll leave it at that for now!

A random weekend trip to Camden and a climb up Megunticook three years ago began my hiking jag. I remember limited views and intermittent rain from our climb. Mostly, though, I remember that that little mountain pretty much kicked my out of shape butt, and convinced me that further neglect of my corporal being was perhaps ill advised.

Three years later, and I not only am about to finish my NH 48, but I own more hiking and camping paraphernalia than I care to admit.
