Do people hike Mt Resolution in Winter? I'm looking for a good spot for night photography over the next 2-6 weeks (without a lengthy or aggressive hike in) and possible camping and this seems like a good fit with the relatively short hike. I was wondering about those ledges though just before leaving the trees. I've only been up there once and I remember them having a pretty good slope and run out. Wondering if they get dangerously icy or are even an avalanche issue. Most reports I see have Crawford and Stairs but not Resolution. I also don't remember if that was a restricted use area and if camping was legal. Appreciate any input.

Resolution and Stairs see traffic all winter long. As far as the ledges or slabs ascending Resolution, they wouldn't concern me at all. The trail sticks to the left for the most part and while it does have some exposure, with the right traction I would hardly consider the route dangerous. AS far as avalanches go, again it would not be something I would worry about. The woods above the slabs are fairly thick and there is not much that would slide from up there. Avalanche slopes need unobstructed runouts with little to no trees and scrub to hold the snowpack. Its about 9 miles RT.

Yah I don't remember it well. I went through my photos but didn't have anything of the ledges. It was 5/27/23 and I remember some wet spots so I wasn't sure of melt water iced it up there. I do recall that it hugged the left side but I don't really recall the woods to the side or above. Thanks for the info.

Out of the three peaks in that area, Crawford sees the most traffic. Less so beyond there. Although one year I was on Resolution on Christmas Day and there was no snow at all.

Camping is "legal" as long as the WMNF backcountry camping rules are followed:

"Additional regulations for the Presidential/Dry River and Pemigewasset Wilderness: No camping, wood or charcoal fires within 200 feet of any trail except at designated campsites."

A few years back we set out for Stairs in December. Nothing was broken past Crawford and we only made it to the resolution shelter site before making camp in the dark.

I figured as a back up if this is the case would be some of the open ledge areas past the Crawford split before the Davis Path turns North. Wouldn't have the Easterly exposure I want but I've caught some awesome sunsets in that area heading out of the woods in the past. Can always convert it to a late night hike if I have to.
