As I neared the end of my 48, I decided that I couldn't think of a better way to finish, than to be a part of something as meaningful as this event, so I signed up to help with Adams. It was Greg's last peak as well so he came along too.
We went up Lowe's Path(4.6 miles, 4,450 ft ele.) to the summit. At the store parking lot it was wicked hot and humid. We felt our only raindrops of the day as we headed off at 7:10 am. The section between the Log Cabin and Grey Knob was pretty steep. I think we gained something like 1,200 feet in .5 miles. Once we got above treeline the temps moderated somewhat, and the wind really picked up which was a definite improvement over the weather below. At the summit, we were in the clouds the whole time, and the winds were whipping. We got the flag up, and took some pictures. We couldn't see 40 feet, let alone another flag, but we know they were out there. A few groups came up and said thanks.
As we were headed down, the summits started to clear, and we had some good views, but couldn't see the Flag on Madison, the only other peak we could see. At the bottom we got invited to a post event celebration with the rest of the folks in the group. One of the guys has a house in nearby. The day was great from beginning to end, and I want to thank all the people involved with it. Chris organized a great trip. I don't hike with people I don't know very much, but this was a great group of guys to hike with. I'm really looking forward to doing it again next year!
As far as this being my "last" peak of the 48, I have mixed emotions about it. On the one hand, given the context of this event, it seems pretty rediculous an endeavor, to select your hikes just because they're on a list.
On the other hand, I went places I wouldn't have gone to otherwise, and I loved every one of them(even, maybe especially Owl's Head)! As far as what's next, I think I'll try some more bushwacking, get to some places I haven't been yet, like the Ice Caves, the Mahoosuc's, Chocorua, etc., and do some more hiking with my dad and my kids. Oh yeah, and more stuff in the winter, too!
