As I neared the end of my 48, I decided that I couldn't think of a better way to finish, than to be a part of something as meaningful as this event, so I signed up to help with Adams. It was Greg's last peak as well so he came along too.

We went up Lowe's Path(4.6 miles, 4,450 ft ele.) to the summit. At the store parking lot it was wicked hot and humid. We felt our only raindrops of the day as we headed off at 7:10 am. The section between the Log Cabin and Grey Knob was pretty steep. I think we gained something like 1,200 feet in .5 miles. Once we got above treeline the temps moderated somewhat, and the wind really picked up which was a definite improvement over the weather below. At the summit, we were in the clouds the whole time, and the winds were whipping. We got the flag up, and took some pictures. We couldn't see 40 feet, let alone another flag, but we know they were out there. A few groups came up and said thanks.

As we were headed down, the summits started to clear, and we had some good views, but couldn't see the Flag on Madison, the only other peak we could see. At the bottom we got invited to a post event celebration with the rest of the folks in the group. One of the guys has a house in nearby. The day was great from beginning to end, and I want to thank all the people involved with it. Chris organized a great trip. I don't hike with people I don't know very much, but this was a great group of guys to hike with. I'm really looking forward to doing it again next year!

As far as this being my "last" peak of the 48, I have mixed emotions about it. On the one hand, given the context of this event, it seems pretty rediculous an endeavor, to select your hikes just because they're on a list.
On the other hand, I went places I wouldn't have gone to otherwise, and I loved every one of them(even, maybe especially Owl's Head)! As far as what's next, I think I'll try some more bushwacking, get to some places I haven't been yet, like the Ice Caves, the Mahoosuc's, Chocorua, etc., and do some more hiking with my dad and my kids. Oh yeah, and more stuff in the winter, too!

I was wondering how the other presidential peak folks were faring - I was on washington -

I wasn't part of the official croo, but knew the guys doing it and helped out a bit with getting the flag up and down. (not up and down the peak - but setting the flag up - which was a challenge yesterday!)

Washington was averaging aroung 50MPH at about noon with highers gusts.

The flag went up, but I have never seen PVC bend like that before. took 6 people to get the flag and pole back down safely. :)

Not a chance in hell to see any other peaks. I couldn't see the summit building until 20 feet away from it.

Nice report and congrats on your 48! :) great way to end it :)

Congrats Jason!
Great peak to finish on - probably not my first choice to lug a flag polu up! :D
Great job - hiking is even better after the list - keep at it! :)

Funny thing is, I was never into the list thing 'til I got close to finishing. Before that, I just went where I felt like going. Its just that I kept doing the same peaks over and over, so I'm grateful to the list for broadening my horizons. Now I plan to broaden them some more. :)

Jason, finishing a list is an individual accomplishment, take it out of the Flag's shadow !! You did great all summer, I think we were following the same itinary at one point.

I will be seeing you soon so I can get my hiking poles, thanks again for picking 'em up,

-Julie

Way to go, Jason!
:D

Thanks Sabrina. I look forward to seeing a trip report about the move. ;)
Maybe I'll tag along on one of your trips to the 'daks one of these days, although I suspect I'm a bit slower than you and MichaelJ. I usually finish in book time, maybe just a tad faster.

Congratulations, Jason (and Greg, too)! It's cool that you "finished" the 48 just as Lou is starting them--a real alpha and omega thing! Thanks you you and everyone who took part in FOT48.

I thought so too!
I asked him how he felt about the wind up there above treeline( 50mph sustained) and the elevation gain on a trail with no switchbacks, and he said it was " AWESOME"! He's hooked. He has to come from Philly, so I'm not sure how many more he'll get to by '08 FOT48, but I'll ask him next year! :D
