It was a full house at casa da Freighttrain last night. With the holidays over it was time to hook up with my good friend Kevinski and work on checking the final marks off the 48. I also had the pleasure of my girlfriend Alyssa again with me this week. She got her first taste of winter hiking last week and has been eagerly awaiting this weeks hike. And if that wasn't enough, Nathan a childhood friend of mine whom I have not seen in way to long contacted me with interest of hitting the trail.
With the cast set know we needed a plan and Ike seamed like a fine one. Both Kevin and I needed the peak. Him for #47, #42 for myself. Without knowing for sure what the status was with Mt Clinton rd plan a would be Ike via Edmund path with a Monroe as a side option. Plan b was Ike and Pierce via Crawford path.
As luck would have the gate was open and plan a it was. Being a history buff I really wanted to hike Edmund path, also the WMG painted a very nice picture of the trail which I would have to agree with. Sabrina you have a very nice trail and you do great job and for that I thank you. The trail had very little snow at first with ice underneath. Kevin and Alyssa were soon wearing microspikes (which I would have as well if I didnt forget mine). Nathan and I made it about a mile and a half till we saw the first thick Ice flows and put on our crampons. Above 3500 feet the trail was starting to fill in nicely.
The temp was 27 degrees at the start of the hike and by the time we hit treeline dropped to about 20 but the winds were blasting at a steady 35-45mph with gust of 50 the whole time we were up there. The clouds that were covering the peaks were producing a delightful upslope snow that was light and fluffy but with the winds it was making the visibility about 30 -50 feet. We hit the summit and took our pictures and descended back to the trees to enjoy some of Kevin's piping hot apple cider. With the poor visibility we decided to skip Monroe and we gently strolled down the Edmund Path back to our vehicle. About 20 mins later we look out towards Jefferson notch and see blue skies starting to poke out in places, oh well there is always next time. Didn't see to many people Kevin and Nathan saw to people on the summit and said a quick high. Alyssa and I had descend a couple mins before. We did see grid finisher Jeremy Clark, nice meeting your Jeremy.
Well #42 is in the books and the trip could not have been more fun. I made a video of the whole shabang. Here is the link but I will warn folks its a little on the goofy side. mannerhttp://youtu.be/AuJnSOnqJfM
