Hi everyone....I finally took the two minutes required to register instead of lurking behind the scenes. The information posted on the forums has been very helpful and made my hikes in the Whites very enjoyable. Thanks!!!

Well the wife and I are headed up on August 8th to do a hike. Over time, I'm trying to complete the 4000 footers....So far I have ten under my belt. However I'm a little confused...

I was looking to hike up 19 Mile Brook Trail to Mt. Hight to Carter Dome to the hut and back down. Kinda like a clockwise hike. Anyway Mt. Hight is listed as 4675' on my map. I cant find it listed in the AMC book, or my water bottle for that matter, as a 4000'. Can anyone explian this..... Thanks and happy hiking....

Welcome to VFTT!

It's not on the list because it doesn't meet the 200-foot col rule... it doesn't rise 200 feet from its low point on connecting ridge with a higher neighbor. Other peaks in a similar boat are Guyot, Little Haystack and North Carter.

Even though it's not a list-peak, you should definitely head up anyway if it's a nice day. It has the best views of the range!

Beautiful peak with expansive views. Sat on top for 2 hours on a cloudless day and didn't want to leave. And because it's not on the "lists", didn't have to share it with any one else on a Columbus Day weekend. :D Cater Dome had 15-20 people on it straining their necks for a view.

Welcome

Hello Jeeper and welcome to VFTT. You will love it here as it is the best place to find other hikers and to learn a ton about hiking in the northeast and the world. Carter dome is my only repeat 4k and due to poor weather twice I still have not got over to Mount Hight. From everything I hear, I think it is one of the best peaks with a view in the Whites.

Mt Hight

Don't be surprised if you get a visit from a Canadian Gray Jay while on Mt. Hight....and watch your lunch, they have been known to grab food right out of your hand on its way to your mouth.

I had my first experience on Mt. Hight this past weekend. It has the most amazing views around! It really was the highlight of my past weekend!

Of all the peaks in the Carter/Moriah Range I would find it safe to say that Hight has the BEST view! I also rank it as my top view from a peak not on the 4K list. TAKE THE TRIP!

Very well said. It's a blessing that it's not on the list. The hike is nice and the views are stunning, and each time I've climbed it, I was alone and I sat for a long time with just the gray jays! I would recommend getting up there early if you care about good photographs of the Presidentials. Early in the morning the sun is in a nice position.

Hope you enjoy it. Happy Trails!

Welcome to VFFT :)

After getting lazy the first time doing Carter Dome and bypassing Hight, now when I am in the area I am more likely to make Hight the destination. Beautiful peak.

Oh, crap...it's now on another list and will be frequented more often?

Last time I was there, we skipped Carter Dome and "wasted" an hour on top of Mt Height...

Hidden Gems

Same deal for Reagan/Clay. These are the hidden gems of the Whites. They are largely ignored because they're not on The List, yet have awesome views.

Guyot is one of my all-time personal favorites. If you hike to Zealand and are terribly disappointed by the wooded summit, continue on to guyot for the windiest, prettiest view in the great pemi wilderness.

Guyot would have to be my favorite of the "non" peaks with Clay & Franklin close behind. (behind only because the view they provide while different than others on the ridge is not much different)

I've also had good company on Guyot & both in good weather after fog had limited views on S. Twin & in poor weather when the wind & fog moved across the top too. Open & exposed with shelter not too far away.

Depends on what list you're looking at. Many of these gems are on the Trailwrights list (72 peaks). And as they are counted individually you get to savor each one - I know I did! Slide Peak in winter is a diamond!

Hight views

If you treasure views, climb Hight. Scudder just added it to the 2005 edition of his White Mountain Viewing Guide.

Here's what he says (p. 238):

[begin quote] And we had set out to feature Carter Dome! After huffing and puffing our way up a steep trail out of Carter Notch we arrived at a summit that lacked a full circle view. But then another climber suggested that we head over to adjacent Mount Hight, a lower summit perhaps, but one with a view unobstructed by nearby greenery. . . . . To be sure Carter Dome . . .stands in the way of Hight's view southeast. [end quote]
