Trail Conditions: A-Z was hard packed up to the Mt. Tom Spur, the Spur was also well packed. Willey range between Tom & Field was easy to follow but snowshoes were a big help. Avalon was packed but not as well as A-Z, many glissaders have made it nice & slick.
Special Equipment Required: We were able to get up Tom with just our boots. A solo female hiker had started with snowshoes but switched to bare boots because she was slipping on the steeper terrain. We stayed in bare boots until we were more than ½ way to Field which was too late. We kept the snowshoes on the rest of the day.
Comments: Optional – Five times on Tom & 9th for Field but the first time I did them both by doing Tom first. Surprised that it’s Tom that was the more packed down trail. A group of four had done Field & Willey so it’s packed down but with recent snow, you’ll be better off with snowshoes on all the trails. Appears after Willard the Highland guests most opt for Tom when they don’t cross Route 302.
