Hi all,

Saturday I hiked up to the summit with my roommate to enjoy some record temps at the summit, it hit 56 at 6288ft.. The East Snowfields were buttery soft and untracked lines were plentiful. Traversed over to The Bowl, hiked up a bit to get over to Center Headwall. Took the line between two boulders and I started hammering turns down at a pretty good speed, snow was fairly smooth still so things seemed easy. I made it to below the rocks before my routine run changed...

At this point I felt the whole slope give way and start groaning underneath me. I realized quickly I had just touched off an avy and my first instinct was, "Oh $h*t, just point it." I was able to stay on my feet for a hundred feet or so as the snow was breaking all around me thinking I might beat it. But it had me and soon I was on my ass "paddling" back, just focusing on keeping my board downhill and myself on top of everything, then back on my feet before falling right at the end. At a certain point before coming to rest, I realized I would end up OK and actually started to enjoy it a bit, crazy, I know. At the time of the slide, I was riding with a foam big hand on, which also ended up safe on top. The Lunch Rocks erupted into a cheer, hopefully a once in a lifetime experience for me. Fortunately it was a pretty shallow fracture, only 8-12 inches maybe tops and the runout was clear of rocks and cliffs. Here's what I looked at just after coming to rest below. A number of people in the rocks told me I was the highlight of the day, I told them, "I planned the whole thing." Yea right....:D

Turns out somebody had a camera rolling and caught it on tape, unbelievable...

The rest of the day was enjoyed with my buddies hangin out, enjoying a few beers, watching people get WORKED, tumbling like ragdolls down the Bowl. Most casualties were coming out of the Chute it seemed. One guy literally fell off the cliff between The Chute proper and it's northern variations, at least 30 feet onto his side. I caught this guy on camera setting off the 3rd avy of the day, then biting it off an icefall. Classic.

On the way out I hiked over to the Lower Snowfields instead of hiking back down to Hojos, nice turns over there out of the sun. The Sherby was open about 2/3rds the way down, had to take off and put back on once before all was said and done. Great day.

And oh yea, I did see one woman wearing a white VFTT t-shirt. I think I remember her having red hair? You out there? :)

Rest of the Pics from Saturday 4/25

Saw your avy as I was on the boot ladder to the right of the Lip. It was the second favorite highlight of the day. The girl skiing in the bikini was #1.

Great post with lots of wow! Good to remind us of all the dangers in the ravine in spring! That footage is amazing!

Glad you are okay...

I'm glad everything ended up OK. That could have been a lot worse.

This is exactly why we weren't in the Ravine on Saturday. Avy danger led us to go elsewhere.

Thanks everyone, I was lucky. I in no way, shape, or form take this lightly. I WAS IN AN AVALANCHE. And I took this as a learning experience, don't really wanna do that again.

I wanted Sluice but heeded rangers advice to steer clear. After my avy, I watched as 3 guys made their way down it on fresh tracks. I was sure it would break, never did, go figure.

glad there weren't any kids there

I catch what you're refering to. :) ;)

But there were kids, directly in the way even. One of the figures running out of the way in the video was a kid maybe 10-12 years of age, the one that dove. He was holding a sled that he had dropped when he ran, he said to me, "Nice run man. Now I'm gonna go sled your avalanche." Or something to that effect.

I watched him hike up and sled down, hitting the avy debris he promptly cartwheeled pretty violently before coming to rest downhill from his sled.

TDawg, That's one ride you'll never forget! Nice job staying with it to the end. Impressive and fun to watch but certainly something more powerful than any of us really wish to "ride". Glad you came away unscathed as did the potential victims below. Guess you probably got the 10 rating from the lunch rocks, huh. Did it help you get the cell number of the bikini clad skier?;)

TDawg, I saw that video this morning but just now read your TR. I am so glad you are okay! I watched that footage with my eyes popping, hoping that everyone would end up being okay. Wow.

Hey, TDawg, good to see that you survived. But, I have watched the video five times, and I still cannot discern whether you were on skis, snowboard, snowshoes, or bare boot? Unlike the Boott Spur (Dodge's Drop) avy that took two climbers down 800 ft two weekends ago, at least the runout in the Bowl is a bit more forgiving. But, it is still pretty easy to get a broken neck in any avy, so good karma was with you, I think.

I'm on a snowboard, partially on my ass, partially riding it out. Good karma, luck, whatever you believe in. I never really panicked I think, so that and the fact I'm pretty comfortable on steep terrain helped. But I'm gonna go buy some lottery tickets.....

TDawg, really glad you are OK. Really glad you have learned from this--experience is so often the best teacher.

But I GOTTA say. ANY parent who let their kid hang out in the middle of the bowl on a day like Saturday is a &*%(^%$ idiot. (Apologies to the mods, but there it is.)

I am all for taking kids to Tux, but lets use our brains, eh?
