Papa Bear, I've seen Katahdin from Cadillac only twice that I can think of and I spend a couple of weeks on the island every year. The air has to be crystal clear.
For anyone familiar with the southern Adirirondacks, in the spring we go up Black Bear Mtn (outside of Inlet) and check if we can see Marcy. Usually we can unless the weather is lousy. Once summer sets in it's way too hazy in New York to see that far. Too much air pollution coming in from the west and the humidity is a distance killer. I always take my binos and check out the snow on the high peaks. It's fun to see it melt as the spring progresses. Black Bear itself is still knee deep in snow in the balsams but on the open ridges it's sunbathing time on a sunny day.
