We spent a couple nights in Twin Mountain, hoping to get the pup another couple 4K footers. We woke up to heavy pouring rain the last day we were there, scrapping our plans. Around 11:30 the rain stopped and the day started to turn around, so we decided to go and hike something easy. Mt Willard became our choice as we heard the views of the notch from the ledges were something to see and we were not disappointed.
The train station parking lot was full, so we went and parked down at Saco Lake. We did the 100 yards on the Avalon Trail and turned left on to the Mt Willard Trail. The first water crossing only left a few rocks visible to get across on. The second water crossing had branches lying across it to walk over on. When the trail takes the first right, that is when you start to ascend.
As the trails starts to climb along the side of the water, we could hear the roar of the water. We were quite sure that the level was higher than usual as it seems as though it has been raining all summer. lol The trail conditions were very wet and muddy. There were sections where there was running water on the trail.
The condition of the trails were easily forgiven with the views that we were offered on the ledges. The day was had overcast, but the views were still fantastic. The mountain was quite busy for saying it was a Thursday that started off with torrential downpours. Guess everyone had the same idea we did. We followed along the trail from the ledges into the woods to hit the true summit and ended up on another small outlook that we had all to ourselves.
We had just missed seeing the Notch train from the ledges. When we heard the horn, we picked up our pace for the ledges, but it had already passed. We did get a good look at our second destination on the day...Evans Family Memorial. We did make a video of our hike up Mt Willard for anyone who might be interested in seeing the trip...
