The crew: Arm, Donna, MtnPa, Stev-O, Adventurous, Nif, Jen's friends Al and Joan and me.

We took the Kinsman Ridge Trail up and the Gordon Pond Trail for the return. Weather was gorgeous and the trail up to Wolf was in good shape. Enjoyed some birthday treats for Arm at the summit viewpoint. Stopped to visit Gordon Pond on the trip down, and snow angels were made (one with a halo and one without...hmm). The first mile or so of the GPT consisted of a not-so-solid icy crust over mud and stream. A couple of spills in this section, but all the actual water crossings were accomplished without incident.

Great day to be out on the trail! Nice to meet Joan and Al - hope to see you again soon. Thanks to MtnMama and MtnPa for hosting a wonderful dinner afterwards.

How's the Gordon Pond Trail? The AMC Guide mentions that it may be abandoned. :(

Very early in our hiking career, Pat and I went to Gordon Pond and nearly got lost just trying to walk around it. Luckily we often learn from our mistakes.

We were not expecting to find much of a trail, but in fact it was wide, blazed and easy to follow. I would like to go back in the summer - beautiful sections following the stream and a nice waterfall. I took a pic or two of the frozen waterfall, but not sure they came out very well.

The trail gets more confusing near the end where it crosses snowmobile routes and a power line corridor. It was getting pretty dark for us when we reached a confusing and muddy section at the power lines, and we bailed to the nearby road to speed our trip out.

I forgot to mention earlier what we wore on our feet (although the conditions have likely changed in the past few days). Most barebooted the entire way. One person wore snowshoes for most of the hike. Some light traction was helpful for the sometimes icy section between Wolf's summit and the junction with Gordon Pond Trail.

Thank you for posting this TR!

In the summer months, I’ve looked down at Gordon Pond from a ledge slightly off the Kinsman Ridge Trail near the summit of Mt. Wolf. And, I’ve hiked several miles up the Gordon Pond Trail for some other off-trail adventures. BUT, I’ve never been to Gordon Pond itself!!

You got some fantastic photos from the shoreline of Gordon Pond with Mt. Wolf in the background. OK . . . I can feel a trek to Gordon Pond coming on. Your TR has definitely kindled a fire in the belly!

For the portions of the trail that I’ve been on, I can confirm what you said about the Gordon Pond Trail being in good shape. It runs through some beautiful mature hardwoods, and has a very picturesque brook nearby along many segments. Hopefully more postings like yours will encourage others to give it a test run!

Below is a shot of Gordon Pond from a ledge near the summit of Mt. Wolf:

Nice! Thanks for sharing your photos...I can't wait to get back out. Sis and I did a backpack over the Kinsmans earlier this year and we came out the Grodon Pond Trail as well. We totally missed the pond althogether but very much enjoyed the trail.... that was the trip my camera broke so I didn't get too many pictures.

sweet!
looks like you guys had another fun and "adventurous" day!
wish i was not so busy with all the family crap!

Nice pics Rebecca...:D

It looks like a perfect day to hike with beautifull blue skies!

Wish I could of joined you guys....

Nice slideshow!

Gordon Pond Trail was very pleasant and picturesque. Soon the marshy sections will be solid and covered with snow. Definitely worth a side trip. Pay close attention to the trail signs where the trail meets the snowmobile routes. If you miss the trail leaving the power lines follow the power lines to the road.

Best birthday party I've been to in a long time

Very nice! I need to get into that area at some point.

Lonesome Lake had a similar set of snow angels on it that same afternoon.

We had great weather for the hike up to Wolf for Arm's birthday. It was a longer day than we had expected...the reason why still remains a mystery but I think the PUD-lined ridge might have had something to do with that.

I was cursing the GPT trail for awhile - I kept breaking through ice-into water, stinky mud, etc. Other than being aggrevated with the trail it really was quite beautiful. Gordon Pond is on my list to go back to!!!

Still can't figure out how we lost the trail when we hit the powerlines but the road worked just as well.

Thanks again to Mtnmama for the awesome dinner afterwards!!!

Wow Donna and Arm sure move fast. I didn't realize they had traversed the whole ridge, left there mark at lonesome lake, then caught back up. I had all I could do to get up and down the PUDs as they came. Donna even had to give me 1/2 her sandwich just to keep me moving.

I just thought they were back there eating while I waited at the trail junction.
:D
