Sure was a great time to be out hiking in the White Mountains on Sunday!

I'd been doing some hiking with an old friend recently and felt it was time for his first NH4K (my 9th), so we headed up Mt Osceola. I had read about the chimney near the col between Osceala and East Osceola, so while he hung out at the peak I headed down to check it out.

I really love steep climbs (Kinsman Ridge to NE Cannonball is one of my favorites) and this short near-verticle climb was a thrill. Very easy to find footholds and fingerholds, and what is it, about 25 to 30 feet? I gave it a slow climb down, tagged the col and went back up it a little faster. When I later climb East Osceola from the other side, I can't wait to come back and climb the chimney again! Maybe I'll do the bypass trail too, just to check it out.

So where are the other chimneys in NH? I'm not too much into bushwacking (yet), so ones on trails would be great to hear about. Any other near verticle climbs I might want to check out? I'm not looking to go on any technical climbs, though. At least not yet...

Another first for today - met my first VFTTer (wonder how many I've encountered without knowing it - we need secret hand signals or something  ) : the fast-hikin' Arm. Nice to meet you Arm!

North Tripyramid slide off Livermore trail is a nice one. Pick a nice dry day.

Nice route to bag a couple of NH4K's Enjoy :)

Dave's website has a great write-up about this

How about Mt. Washington via Huntington Ravine or the Flume slide trail? Those two both have some nice scrambling.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll try to check them out soon.

Does the Dilly Trail have any near-verticle parts? Or is it more like the steep hike to NE Cannonball? I'm doing Moosilauke at the end of July and thought I'd do the Dilly as a warm-up

Rocksnrolls,

You won't have to worry about climbing a steep trail when you hike Moosilauke, because the trails are not all that steep, however it is a very beautiful mountain, one of the nicest I have seen.
