There are nice views to the south and east from the East Garfield Ridge Peak.

West Garfield Ridge

I did the west peak by climbing Garfield, then down, bushwhack, then back up and out in the winter... a memorably poor selection of routes in a life full of such errors.

Mohamed has it right. The correct name for these peaks is E & W Garfield Ridge.
I don't know that there is a "correct" name according to the US Board of Geographic Names, but ME gives the same explanation that I would have

Mt SPAM.............not

Swanson; I have that picture of you (in Winter) next to the Mt S Pam sign,
so don't even try to confuse the folks here. (It was pre-digital, or I would post the mug shot).

Bill; thanx for the solidarity  it's the Pam's!

I was just recently over at ZEALE, or SW Hale, and the sign is gone, but the registers date back to the early 1990's - woo hoo.

It's not a terribly difficult bushwhack to the West peak, unless of course you take a 90 degree turn off the GRT, directly "under" the peak. Right there, along the GRT it's wicked thick initially. Right John?

Let me suggest that you do the ridge peaks by the Gale River approach, and leave the summit of Garfield as a separate hike up the Garfield Trail.
Let me suggest that you combine the hikes to save 2000' elevation gain, but do a loop using the snowmobile trail/logging road previously described by ME

Unofficially official

Skiguy asks a question without a particularly coherent answer. The FTFC (four thousand footer committee) maintains several lists which they recognize and give awards for, namely NH 4000 footers, NE 4000 footers and NE Hundred Highest. The FTFC officialy does not recognize the NHHH or 3K peaks and so there is no "official" list. While it doesn't recognize the list, the FTFC tries to keep a roster of individuals who have finished these unrecognized lsts.As a result, several hikers (including several members of the FTFC) have compiled and distributed lists of their own.

If this answer makes sense, I respectfully suggest you seek professional assistance.

In that spirit I have compiled lists of NHHH and NH 3K peaks and have a copy of one NE 3K list. Have fun!
Bill, the closest thing I have to an "official list" was sent to me by Gene D. in January 2002. In his letter to me Gene called it "the new unofficially official New England 3000-footer list".

Thanks for the suggested alternative. I probably won't go for any of these before the spring, which will give me time to get out maps and your description of that loop.

Has anyone been to West Garfield Ridge peak in the last few months? I was there today and I was disappointed with what I found on what really appeared to be the highest point on the peak.

Could anyone confirm what is there (It is not a sign and it is not a cannister...) so I know if I found the right spot or not?

Exactly!

It looked like the handle that a cannister would be mounted on.
Would you say this is the consensus summit for this peak? I'm counting it.

You are not alone..... Last winter all I found on West Garfield Ridge was that same Yellow handle; but it certainly appeared to be near summit to me !!
