Need some suggestions on some cheap gear. (I recieve campor catalog already).

Current Gear that I want to upgrade, renew for comfort reasons, or gear getting too old.
Backpack - Current Model Lowe Alpine 60 (too small for winter)
Sleeping Bag - Current Model Peak One -20 (way too heavy and old)
Boots - Alico Aspen (good for 3 season, bad for winter - need a non-double plastic non-sorel winter hiking boot).
Water Filter - current model's filter are not made anymore, would like cheap, small unit.

Also need the following: Smart Wool Socks, winter gaiters (maybe super gaiters), fleece or pile top to wear while hiking (currect system makes me sweat too much), and any other good buys out there you may have seen.

For the sleeping back, check out the backside sleeping back. SherpaK has been pimping them for a while and knows more about them then me (and has probably used his more than I have). I picked up a -15 degree bag fromt hem for Christmas for 104 dollars including shipping. It is a very nice bag. I think he has two of them. They had some shipping problems earlier (largely out of stock) but that was rectified in early December.

Chepaer than dirt

Cheaper than dirt dot com is where I got my 20 degree summer bag for $65.00. I use the Katahkin filter, light, effective and reasonable. I got it on sale & cant remember what I paid.

Try checking out some of the hunting sites and para-military-LEO type sites.

Used equip in publications like want-advertiser or craigslist dot com are also places to find equipment used once.

I got new winter boots this year at kittery trading post for under $100.0 and they are toasty and not heavy on feet.

Good luck, new equipment is a daunting proposition financially.

check at international mountain equipment in north conway. they have a consignment shop in the basement. even if you don't see anything you need, it's worth a visit as it's a museum of old school gear.

Sierratradingpost.com usually has some good prices on SmartWool and other brands of wool socks.

Campmor retail using has a pile of used sleeping bags that one can sometimes find a deal if you don't mind the "used" part.

I recently, bought a new pair of gaiters (lowe Alpines) from STP for $30, they're nice, a zipper and velcro closure system, front zip, drawstring closure on the top. Not Goretex but i don't need it to be. It's a lot nicer than my cheap pair of Threshold that was always falling down on me.

One Word

ebay

I got a great deal on a Dana Terraplane, and have gotten a bunch of other goodies too. If you are not in a hurry, I think this is a great place to shop for gear. (However, you will not find bargains on snowshoes.)

Love IME's consigment shop!

Thanks Bruno! I've been there and I agree. It's funny thou I've seen the same items there for years now. I have picked up a few items there i.e. my old Peak One -20 sleeping bag for $50.00 several years ago.

Thanks to the rest of you guys for the links and ideas. Hopefully when taxes come back I'll have enough dough!

outdoor gear exchange, Burlington VT

Check these guys out, lots of great stuff on consignment!! Check out their website. Even their new stuff is pretty cheap.

FYI, Campmor

Just a heads up to the NYC area folks. Campmor is having sale on it's XC ski gear. Saw a bunch of Madshus XC skis on sale, a couple of Karhu Ursas (1/2 metal edge) and some Rossi touring skis on sale there on Saturday.

However, they do NOT have the Banff Mtn Film Festival tickets on sale yet..

You just missed REI's used gear sale. You might watch out for the next one (probably in April). There are some awesome deals on good gear and clothing mixed in with some bad deals on unusable stuff (so gather up what looks good to you and inspect carefully before buying).

I've got some of my best gear deals there (like Atlas 1033's for under 60 dollars, and a Hennessey Hammock for less than 40).

Added: I'll have to be careful not to publicize this anymore. The scene at the Boston REI Saturday was pretty zooey - with folks cutting in line when the doors opened, and few body blocks and hip checks on the way to gear..

Did taxes...

I did my taxes tonight and me and my wife are getting back plenty. So that means I can spend some cash in some new gear.

OK I don't have a ton, but a little more than I orginally thought. I'm looking first for a lightwieght -20 down sleeping bag, a larger pack (I have some in mind), a leather double boot or some other kind of cold weather boot, and a new outter wind/water shell that has great breathablity.
