No Good

The best part of skiing Cannon is having the ability to take a beautiful 5 minute hike and then enjoy some unique terrain with a backcountry feel.Running lifts and ,god forbid grooming, would destroy the Mittersill experience.

It is but Cannon is a locals mountain. No slopeside ammenities means it will never be a huge tourist draw the like Loon.

The plans for Mittersill that I have heard are very, very minimal. A little snowmaking and a little grooming, which I have personally inferred to mean near the bottom to get you back to Cannon proper. And in 3-4 years a lift, but it would be a double chair right in the place of the old one. That's hearsay but was reportedly heard said by someone reliable.

Haven't skied there yet but am looking forward to being able to ski the old trails someday.

Now that they will be apart of the ski area now -- how does that factor in with SAR etc -- with those runs no longer out of bounds -- maybe in the long run this is a safer/less costly land use option if it shifts the responsibility for any rescues to the ski area?

The questionable part of this was the original deal in which Mittersill Ski Area was given to the state because it was losing money, but the condos etc would be far more valuable if it was operating

Having the state own a ski area which benefits certain condos gives me a bad taste, like the proposed Sunapee deal

Agreed, but people = money. This area could really use a shot in the arm. While it is nice for things to stay the way they were, improving the economy for a few should have a trickle effect.

Cannon is a great mountain, and the Mittersill slopes will be a nice added more sheltered face to the front 4.

Here is a recent article (12/18) from the Boston Globe regarding Cannon and Mittersill:
The article claims the comments to the USFS are 30:1 in favor, but that's certainly not true of the comments posted to the article. If I owned a condo at Mittersill I'd be sure to submit an official comment. If the special interests submit their comments while ordinary folk don't bother, why are we then surprised when special interests get their way?

Article said no new trails an no cutting anything above 2500 feet.

Only thing I can think of to compare would be Big Squaw Resort up in Greenville. Only half the mountain is groomed and only one lift is running. The rest is free to hike up and board down.

Ah yes a long debate that this one has been. Interesting that the deal has been sealed in contrast to certain members of NH State Government as of late actually calling for Cannon to be leased much like Sunapee...which was promptly stomped by our Governor. Cannon looses money every year; but IMO is still one of the Crown Jewels of NH and should be kept and owned forever for NH's heritage sake going forward. The development of Mitersill in the States Master Plan for that area calls to hopefully attract the Green and Blue skier in an effort to increase revenues. The perceived mentality is that Cannon is a dark, windy, cold, icy place that only the Black diamond skier courts. In other words the develoment of Mitersill is an effort to make the Mountain more skier friendly. Wether it is good or bad I can see both sides.

Interesting

I have whacked from Wells/Tuckerbrook/Coppermine up that way a few times. I hope there is no major impact on what is a pretty nice area below - CM Col, etc..

I don't think you have any worries there Gris as it seems as though it's pretty clear that they will not be development outside the existing footprint of Mittersill. Below is a link to a proposed revision in the Master Plan. I'm not sure how current or relevant the link is but does show some responsible vision going forward IMO.

Wells

I know there was a plan a while back to develop condos over all that CC ski trail network area around the glider field on Rt 116, but don't know what became of that.
