Does anyone know anything about the "rumor" that the herd path for Cliff will be worked on anytime in the future, making it akin to the path for Street and Nye?
I've done it, but now my husband wants to finish up his 46, and he's not relishing the long, lovely day of Redfield (which I really enjoyed) and Cliff together.
Any info appreciated;the planning is half the fun.
Thanks

Yes, there is a new path going in at some point. I think they are waiting on final DEC approval or somthing. Pete Hickey will chime in with the diffinitive word I'm sure.

The route has been flagged I beleive, but NOT cut, so any attempt to follow the new route will meet with serious blowdown and frustration. I think they hope to get to it sometime next year. This is from memory, so pardon my facts if they are vaugue. As I said, Pete will hopefully set us straight. Until then, the old route is still the way to go.

I guess I'm qualified to answer this. I am the maintainer of the Street/Nye path, as well as one who laid out the new route up Cliff.

The new route is flagged, and goes through some SERIOUS blowdown. It took is 3 hours to gothe half mile or so. It is a gentle climb to the ridge, with several places with nice views.... at least I hope the nice views will remain. They may only have been there, because we were standing on 10 feet high blowdown.

As to when it will be done, it will NOT be done before next Fall. It still needs DEC approval. That doesn't worry me, because we had DEC approval for all peaks we have done so far (Macomb, REdfield, Tabletop, S&N and Marshall) Even if we get approval quickly, the work will not be done during the summer, so Fall at the earliest.

And, yes. This will be as nice as the Street/Nye path..... In a way. IMO, nothing beats the nice forest that you walk through climbing S&N. The cliff path goes through almost entirely conifers, and blowdown areas.(IE where EVERY tree has come down) Not as pretty.

There are all kinds of parameters to making a path nice.

I'm glad I read this. Wardy and I are heading up Redfield and Cliff Saturday. A year ago or so, we followed the flagging up the left side of the McComb slide before that new trail was cut in. We finally had to turn around as we were making little progress and darkness was just an hour away. Good to know. slamdog

This time, the flagging is not visible from the trail. WE know where it starts, and we head off in that area to find the flagging. This new path is so far from the existing one, that I really doubt that someone will ever mistake it. Heck, it comes in on a compass bearing that is 90 degrees different.
