Turns out my Canon SD870IS that I literally bought in early august, used out west is not going to be covered under warantee from Canon because it died literally while inside a camera case, with a rain cover on, inside my pack while in the ADKs. Canon is being really idiotic about it so I refuse to buy another Canon.

The Nikon S610 (not the Wi-Fi) one seems to be basically the same thing with a 3" LCD, no viewfinder, SD, li-ion battery, IS and roughly the same price... Seems to be it's Wide-Angle counterpart that is actually a bit lighter than the SD870. It's also 10MP vrs 8mp and a 4x optical zoom vrs 3.8x. Any good?

Really silly these days, if Canon would at least throw me a bone I'd just as well buy a new one but they want to nickle and dime me so oh well, I wont buy a canon...

OOOps, meant S610 in the title...

Jay

P.S. anybody want to buy a brand new box, cables, manuals for an SD870 IS real cheap?

I'd actually go with the Panasonic FX-500 or FX-150. I think they are better cameras then the Nikon in question.

Wanna sell off your NB-5L battery and charger?

OK, will check them out... I now remember you mentioning the Pano in another thread.

Sure, I'll sell you the battery and charger, except currently, Canon has to send me my camera back which has the battery in there so I don't have it yet.....

I even have the useless warantee registration card....

What about the FS20S... I'm not looking at spending more than $250 and the 150 is way too much money to me.

The street price of the FS20S seems to be <$200

or the FX35S which is about $250, it has a spiffier Leica lens and a 25mm wide angle vrs the 30 for the FS20S and a couple of more wizzbang features than the 20S...

Jay, I am totally shocked that you were treated this way. I sent a film camera, about 5 years ago, that was about a year out of warranty back to Canon and the response was fantastic. They checked and reset all sensors and settings and sent it back to me all at no cost!

I too have found Canon warranty service to be very good. They've twice replaced the sensor (on recall, humidity-sensitive) on my A70. Granted this was their invitation for a free repair, but the level of the service department professionalism was well above what I'm used to these days.

Really shouldn't have died in the first place, considering the situation, but I guess it is what companies are now doing, besides out-sourcing everything, not establishing a loyal customer base is kind of petty if you ask me. I used to have a G3 that went through everything, including rain and I've taken kayaking in my cockpit without a drybag. To tell me that they cannot do anything for me is a snub in the nose. So, they've lost a customer and I will no longer buy another canon product so long as I live. Heck, looking at the Panasonics that Dave has rec, it looks not only better on paper than the SD870 I had, it's slightly lighter and cheaper. Lets hope Panasonic (matsushita) is better and hungrier for customers.
