I want to hike the Twins and I have some questions :

1- Do I need a parking pass to park my car at the North Twin Trailhead? If yes, where could I buy it? I would like to buy it on my way to the trailhead. I will come from the North on I-93.

2- I always sleep in my car at the trailhead to have an early start (in the ADKs). Can I do that at the North Twin Trailhead? If not, what are my options?

3- Any other things I need to be aware of?

Thank you,

Yves

1. I think I remember one of those green pay canisters at the trailhead. If not, isn't the Ranger's Station close by on Trudeau Road? Anyone know?

2. You can try to sleep at the trailhead, but you're taking your chances. If you're caught, you will be asked to leave. Haystack Road is patrolled. I've seen them up there late a night checking the area. I don't know that they go car-to-car, but you wouldn't want to be seen roming around the trailhead after dark. I'm fairly certainly there are still marked campsites on Haystack Road. There are no facilities, just flat tent sites. You'll see the parking spots for the sites as you drive up the road toward the trailhead.

3. I know that last year there was a very active USFS and police interest in that particular area. Big Brother could still be watching.

Glad I now know about the parking pass situation, thanks to poster #2.

We're going there Sunday for flags (http://www.flagsonthe48.org). Want to join us? There is a very cheap place in Twin Mt., NH, called Lyon's Hospitality, where bunks are about $18.50, see http://www.lyonsmotel.com. We're staying there Saturday night. The owner is a member here!

We left a car at the No. Twin Trailhead from Sat. morning to Monday afternoon, for a traverse that ended there. There are two of those green self-serve parking ticket dispensers, at the beginning of the dirt road off Rte. 3 ("Haystack Road", although we saw no sign and it would be easy to miss, I think), which I think is for the many campsites along that road, then at the Trailhead itself, which is a couple of miles in, just after a bridge over the Little River. Remember that you need exact change for the $3 per day fee.
Incidentally, we thought the three Trail crossings of that River as of Monday were not bad at all, and were glad not to have done that bushwhack around the two lower ones.
