Hikers: Steve M & Schorman Sr.
Started at Seven Dwarfs. Temps around 13 degrees F. Easy road walk to North Twin trailhead. About 4-6 inches of fresh powder down below....6-8 inches of powder up high. We figure the depth of the hardpacked snow on trail to be approx 4.5 feet.
We strapped on snowshoes at the trailhead and didn't take them off until we got back to the car. Several major blowdowns that we had to crawl under. Snowbridges firm enough to get across the major stream crossings.
We were able to follow the trail until perhaps 1/2 mile from summit....then all signs of a discernible path vanished! Schorman Sr began bushwhacking just the other side of a prominent knoll up top, took us through some super dense scrub, and picked up the true trail again in less than 100 yards....wow, did that feel good!
We tagged the summit in short order despite the raging winds and cold temps. Visibility, however, was excellent. Garfield, Galehead, the Hut and South Twin were all in plain view.....but we had gone far enough for this day. Definitely a great feeling of accomplishment for having bagged this difficult peak in extreme winter-like conditions. Kudos to Schorman Sr. for having the drive and stamina to get us to the top!
Special appreciation to Diane for the excellent meal that awaited us back in Hooksett
