In climbing lore, coming back down the mountain safely is the ultimate measure of a climber’s success, not the number of summits achieved.

 I don't hang with a huge number of serious mountaineers, but there aren't a whole lot of "At-a-boys" and back slapping going around when a summit is not achieved, or even the goal, from what I've seen. Sad, but the person who turns back 5 times is not congratulated on any "ultimate success". Hopefully that person knows they made the correct decisions and isn't looking for any notoriety.
