I had a free day on Saturday, and am starting a new job on Monday so I wanted a bit of adventure. The plan was to grab some dry ice at Acme Ice and head west to Dalton, MA and intercept Jibitz (MEB) on the AT then drive her to Dr Wu's house where she could get a night off the trail.
The drive out to Dalton wasn't bad, and the AT was pretty easy to find, but it was a hot day. I bought a dozen ice cream sandwiches to put in the cooler and started up the trail at noon. Literally 10' into the woods I ran into a north bounder (Wrongway) and delivered my first magic of the day. He was the last hiker I saw until I ran into MEB. I stopped at the shelter 3 miles in and delivered an ice cream to the ridgerunner then back on the trail. In a lovely section of ferns who should I spot headed towards me but Ms Jibitz herself, all smiles and pigtails.
Steve-o had met her at a previous road crossing so she'd already had ice cream and beer, but she wasn't saying no to another. We had a fine hike back to the shelter where we rested a bit (and had more ice cream) and then the final 3 miles back to town, where the Mill Street Tavern had some nice cold beer and killer nachos. I drove her to Dr Wu's house where we had an amazing dinner and enjoyed the entertainment of 6 cats who run the place.
Not many folks on the trail out there that day, all of MEB's fellow north bounders were miles behind so they missed out on all the treats.
