I received this e-mail from my cousin who thinks I am an expert on anything related to the outdoors. So here I am asking the real experts!

"I was wondering if you know of a teen program - wilderness type program - canoe - hiking - climbing - biking that is available either this summer or next. I was thinking it might be good for him. He is into couch potato stuff."

Other info: He lives in New Jersey, is about 14 years of age. Not overweight and has gone hiking but no serious outdoor experience. Can go to ADKs or New England.

Any suggestion out there that I can pass on.

I don't know what the criteria is but the NYS DEC has camps for teens and younger children.

I did not audit this site but the info is likely to be on one of the links on this page. My son and daughter attended Camp Colby some time ago and it was excellent. The camps are age specific and geared to environmental interest and run by the DEC.

There are scholarships available from time to time. The ADK Mt Club chapters sponser kids either fully or partially depending on the demand and their funding. Membership was not required but I bet it would get first available funding. Encon may be able to point you to other sources of scholarships. Though the cost was reasonable compared to private camps.

Here is one for troubled kids that is excellent and expensive.
The group leaders are very good and most were 46r's with good credentials. As I said its for troubled youth and not what you are looking for Allen but it may be of interest to someone else who is searching for something like this.

It is on the way into Heart Lake and an excellent facility. I worked with trouble youth for twenty years and have had the opportunity to visit this place on many occasions.
