I was in one of the two groups who did Owl's Head yesterday. Here are some shots - www.pbase.com/jonathantr.

Thanks to Peak576 who organized and led our group of 13. Thanks also to everybody in his group and in Earl's for an amiable day in the woods.

In case you weren't aware, since Owlshead is in the Pemi Wilderness trip sizes are limited to 10. Having been stopped by the rangers for being in a group larger then 10 (and being the only one who was willing to give my name) they are increasing enforcement.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled trip report.

We all still owe you Dave for that one!! I believe we were busy looking at our shoes at the time shoelace tied checkpoint????..........

Nice meeting your group on the trail and in the parking lot, some of you we met as you hiked in & on our way back out from Bonds! Glad you had a nice day on Owl's Head!

Our report will be up later.....

FYI the summit signs in your photos are already gone. I hiked to both summits yesterday and could not find either sign. The tree on the old summit that held the sign still has the nails with blue backing, but no sign. I can't recognize the tree from the new summit, but I looked around a bit and could not find it. I am thinking Forest Service is monitoring these forums and somewhere they have a closet full of Owl's Head signs.

This sign was on the old summit this past Saturday! Someone had scrawled (old summit) below, you can see the blue backing. I bet this is the 7th sign at least that's been taken down.

The other sign was much smaller, I'm amazed they found it.

The FS should auction off the Owl's Head signs. They will likely find their way back to the summit. They can remove them again, auction them off again, repeat. It would be like a voluntary fine and a revenue source for the FS.

I really hope the FS isn't going up there this time of the year to remove signs (or any time of the year, but that's a debate that's been had already)...that seems like a lot of time and risk to be putting a FS employee through just to remove a sign that only a small number of people will see until the snow's gone.

I suspect it's not a FS employee doing it right now.

If you post pictures of the sign on Owl's Head on this website specifically then the signs will disappear period.

Learn your lesson, never post pictures or descriptions of the sign if there is one on this website.

Enjoy the signs and respect them, don't post pictures of them.

My hunch is there are more a few hikers with a workshop full of Owls Head signs just waiting for the opportunity to be the first to nail up their version...

Someone want to start a poll as to how long it will be before a new one appears? My guess is < week.

They get the signs, but can't get those three nails with blue plastic (on the old summit.)

Tim

Tim - even if 'they' do, it will beat up the tree so much that it will create a type of blaze, visible for several years, which will mark the location of the old sign.

Hi Andy and others. Wolfgang who is a friend of mine went up there yesterday. He actually had asked me to go along but I had to work and couldn't go. He is not a member of VFTT and asked me to post the following message so here it is:

Darn, if only I had left 10 minutes earlier I would have seen the sign or at least Mike wrestling it from the tree.
