Owl's Head Question

With the rain of last night and this morning (7/24), are the Franconia Brook and Lincoln Brook Trail crossings OK for tomorrow or should we try to stay along the west side of the brooks as described in the Trail Guide? Or does it just make sense to go this way anyway considering saving a little distance?

If you're comfortable with a light bushwhack, you can avoid the first two water crossings by bushwhacking from the Black Pond Trail almost due north to the Lincoln Woods Trail.

I'd suggest the bushwhack if your comfortable following a compass heading so you avoid the crossings which will most likely be too deep to rock hop.

This map should help you. Take the trail to Black Pond, follow the trail/herd path around the West side until the northwest corner then take the easiest path following a compass heading of 355 degrees. Be sure to mark where you hit the trail for your return.

If you do decide to do the crossings, bring a pair of water shoes/tevas with you, poles, and a towel to dry your feet and be sure to wear shorts - the water can easily be mid-thigh deep.

If the East Branch hydrograph comes back down below around 300 cfs, you probably will be able to boulder hop the two big crossings, as those two tributary brooks drop a little earlier than the East Branch at Lincoln, and the three moderate crossings higher up the Lincoln Brook Trail even earlier still.

amazing how fast the brooks drop..even after such a heavy rain..i checked for some folks thinking Owl's Head today and upon seeing flow rates yesterday in the 450's advised them going elsewhere as some in the group leary of brook crossings..especially the roaring ones..

down below 300 today so as Dr D says..probably rockhoppable though i suspect there was some water flow on the slide...

We went for the crossings on the brooks this morning and they were only knee deep and no problem. We elected not to whack since it rained pretty hard around 3:00am in Lincoln and the woods were wet at 7:00am.
