we decided to ski part way up Lincoln Brook Trail. As luck would have it, the snow got better and better the higher we ascended, so we decided to complete the loop over the Height of Land and descend to Camp 16 to ski out Franconia Brook Trail.

Presumably you mean 13 Falls?

Wow, Roy! 100% eh? Not just wrong, but 100% wrong. ;)

I probably shouldn't have phrased it that way and have amended the
original post, but I was thinking of a certain dogmatic hiker who posted
that the shortest way to Osceolas distance-wise was from Tripoli Road and
refused to amend his post even when it was pointed out that the AMC White
Mtn Guide said that was the longest.

While hiking times may vary by an order of magnitude, distances are more like mathematical constants.

I have absolutely no interest into debating this topic with you or anyone else, ... A compass bearing readily shows an easterly direction off the summit, and with every step we were moving away from, not closer to, Lincoln Woods. Hence that's why I said it was the long way around.
Why am I still thinking of that other guy? Going around by the trail is
longer in distance than going down the E side to either Rte.112 or 13
Falls (did you see DM's neat photos of the old RR grade?). Especially
good in winter when you can slide.

Yes, going down the E side you go E, but going down the slide you go W then E which turns out to be longer. Measure it yourself.

Another way of doing Owls head if you are strong.

First you hike Lafayette and go in direction of Lincoln. At the Lincoln slide
you take your compass for Owls Head and go down about 2000 feets.
Hike up Owls head and you will cross the heard path .
It just hard to go back on the ridge on the return.

Total climb less than 7000 feets for a 4000 footers....

Only 1 small brooke crosing...

A week ago today as I stood about half way up the Owl's head slide, I looked over toward Lincoln and I thought about your trail report when you described going that way, and I thought also of a report that Timmus did that was roughly the same and thinking especially about the climb back up only one word came to mind "insane." I actually don't mean that in a derogatory sense, it really is a compliment, but the thought of that approach did leave me just shaking my head. :)

When I done that hike in 2006, Owls Head was my 114 th summit on
the NE111 (115) list and I just don't want all the brooks croosing.
The next day I had no energy left but still summit the Moose for my 115.

Maybe one day I will do it again but not alone? :)

On further thought, it does sound like a Unadogger winter route.
