i would agree with the soft shell suggestions. i have been using a pair of patagonia talus pants the last couple seasons. they are not heavy, but provide great wind protection and water resistance. a single layer underneath in real cold seems to do the trick. great freedom of movement as well.

Whatever you do, don't purchase them online if you don't have to. They are just like boots, you need to try them on. I purchased a pair of winter pants online and purchased large becouse medium is usually to small. When I got them they are to big. I have to hike them up to my chest, I look like someone's grandfather when I take my coat off!
 
Schoeller, Schoeller, Schoeller!!! nothing beats pants from the Schoeller, IMHO. the breath great, they dry super fast, and they're warm. i've been to -40 with my MEc ferrata pants and 2 pairs a light weight underwear bottoms and was fine as long as we kept moving.

i only wear the gore-tex when the conditions really crank up, i.e. rain/sleat.
