given all of the pemi loop summaries (including the most recent and amazing record setting one) i thought i would add one more experience to the mix.
i had been wanting to do this hike since the spring, but just never got around to attempting it. yesterdays weather and temps looked perfect so i made it up to lincoln woods for a 6am start.
i decided to go clockwise. it was a quiet and cool hike up to the ridge entering fog and cloud above the step section of the osseo trail. the fog and cloud persisited until the descent of lincoln where it started to clear. i took my first good fall of the season while oogling the opening views. thought i might be done for the day, but walked it off on the climb to lafayette.
i knew the next section was where this hike would really get challenging and indeed it was. i had only hiked that section of garfield ridge once previously and it was in the dark so it was almost a new experience. i took in the views and the breeze on garfield and began the rough traverse of the ridge to galehead hut stopping to pump a quart of water at the campsite spur. the ascent of south twin was looming and it would prove to be the toughest section of the day for me psychologically. a short break and some food at the hut and a little over half an hour later i was on top of south twin watching the clouds blow.
the trip over to guyot and bond seemed mild after the previous section and at about 4:30 i was enjoying the afternoon sun on the ridge just below bondcliffs summit. i made the final climb and then the long descent began. it was fast, but my feet and knees were definitely starting to feel it. hiking the last few miles along the wilderness trail was the only part of the day that felt at all tedious. i made the trip pretty quickly and hit the suspension bridge at about 7:30, 13.5 hours after leaving that morning.
it was a truly stellar day of hiking. i'm glad i finally motivated myself to give the loop a shot.

Outstanding! Congratulations Bryan.

We did it in ~13:30 on 6/8/07 and I must confess, I was very pleased. We did it clockwise too, and walked (fast) most of the way... threw in a bit of running on the final descent off the Bonds. Brief stops (and of course, photos :) ) on every summit, with a break of ~30 minutes at the Galehead hut.

Other than a Bigelows traverse "warm up" back in May, various elements have conspired against us completing a long distance hike this year. Now I'm all fired up to try the Pemi loop again, counterclockwise, in 2010. I will be 50years old. No records in sight, to be sure... but I would be very, very pleased with a sub-15:00.

Congratulations Bryan!

I was thinking about firing off a note to you about a couple planned hikes. After reading this report there's no point.

Well done!

Earl

Awesome job!The pemi loop rules and it is the best feeling in the world to sit on the last peak of the day and look back on the route, tremendous feeling of accomplishment.
