Percious - I'm thinking of climbing the Nippletop and Dix (west slopes) slides this weekend, which will require a whack off the east side of Nippletop... hence, the photo request. The scar on the east face of Nippletop looks inviting, but the photos show some really dence forest in the drainage below. The northeast ridge looks like the best bet. This trip is for recon of another hike I have "planned" for later this year (not going to divulge details yet). If you're interested this weekend, let me know. If not, I'll try to remember to drop you a line when I have my other hike formally planned.

When I took that pic in post 2 (last tuesday) I was looking carefully at that side of Nip and figured the ridge to the right of the bowl looked to be the easiest way up. The scar/slide is pretty short to be a good route up except for the views you'd get from it. Here's a zoomed view of the same thingright here

When reading I didnt realize that this was dated -- I was going to tell Rico to do a bit of research on the site as this topic has been covered previously with some good information about where to head off Nippletop to avoid rock cliffs. The good news is that it is, reportedly, a great trip.

Update

The trip was a complete failure. LONG story short, I left my maps at home, lost half my water, turned left when I should have gone right, missed the slide, bushwhacked all the way to the summit (thick is an understatement), decided to hike over Dial/Bear Den instead of doing more bushwhacking, ran out of water just before Noonmark, got baked by the sun on the burned shoulder of Noonmark, and was relentlessly attacked by blackflies and deerflies on the far side of the mountain. Other than that, it was great.

I plan on going back in a couple of weeks if the weather cooperates. Found out where I made my mistake and won't have any problem finding the slide. I should be posting a TR soon.

Does anyone know when that slide formed and what caused it? I know it wasn’t there in August of 2000, because I have a picture of from then and the slide isn’t there. This would mean the slide formed after Hurricane Floyd.

Rico, Congrats on admitting the shortcoming!! I admire that -- lots.

Now's the chance to do this... follow you and get it right!!! Can't wait to hear about it.

lumberzac - I'm thinking it's older than that. I wouldn't normally comment on it, but I was active on the thread. I know I've read several reports and comments about the slide being tough to get to through dense underbrush.
