Plant ID? In/near Shenandoahs

I've an uncle who's hiking the AT. His wife recently posted the below picture to the web. I've never seen anything like this plant. Anyone have any ideas?

It was taken along the AT in or just south of the Shenandoahs.

It's a parasitic flower (plant) known as squawroot. Actually my wife and I recently saw this blooming in the Great Smoky Mountains.
