During the end of my Presi Traverse this past rainy saturday, on Pierce, noticed right next to the USGS marker, there's a threaded metal rod sticking out of the rock. Any idea what this was for. Did not see any other matching rods...

Just wondering...

Going to work on my report sooner or later! Had a fun time, despite the weather!

was it stainless ?. If so it may be a remnant of Washburn's mapping project

Didn't look stainless though I didn't look closely. It was a simple steel rod whose end was threaded and sticking about 3-4 inches above the rock and right next to the USGS marker on the summit.

Conceivably, yeah, I could see it being used for some mapping project as it was right next to the USGS marker.

Just being a curious hiker,

:intrigued: I noticed stainless rods on Mt. Madison and John Quincy Adams, was wondering if the USGS has started doing something different. Is there a good article that describes how the Washburn map was made? It's one of my favorites.
