Sugarloaf and Spaulding (ME), 10/23/2010
Date of Hike: 10/23/10
Peaks/Trails: Sugarloaf and Spaulding via AT and spur trails
Cast of Characters: CrazyBob, Petch, and Henrietta
Trail Conditions: Fairly dry with some icing on the rocks/ledges and rime ice at elevation
Trip data: about 10.8 miles, 3750ft ele gain, 6 hrs hiking, 6 hrs driving
Just a few comments, and pics:
- For the record, I preferred Def Leppard's first 2 albums, and not much after that.
- Okay, Okay, the rumors of CrazyBob and I going for the NE67 can now be confirmed. Dang Paparazzi! I'm starting to like the word "Dang"- "Dang woodchucks, stop chucking my wood!" I love that commercial.
- Caribou Valley (Pond) Road is in semi-rough shape. Recommend vehicle with some ground clearance but did see a Hyundai Accent make it all the way to the Steel grated bridge! I would not recommend this unless bringing extra motor oil, antifreeze, lots of ductape, and plenty of environmentally friendly absorbent pads. Plan on 20 minutes to travel the 4 miles.
- Saw 3 lady section-hikers doing the Crockers, one of which was wearing sandals with socks! WTF? I can just imagine punching through the first frozen puddle......I want to understand, but I just don't, and I am perfectly ok with that.
- Very cold on top of Sugarloaf with fairly high winds. It's been months since I had my face frozen. Maybe, it will help my complexion.
- The ski rotunda building on top was open. The place was pretty much trashed. An old sleeping bag, wood stove, functional microwave, assorted graffiti, and plenty of mice poop. But, it was nice to get out of the wind.
- We saw a plaque on a rock, along the ridge on the way to Spaulding stating the AT sections were joined in that area to complete the whole Appalachian trail (see pic in slideshow)
- Spaulding peak offers pretty much nothing.
- A lot of ice on the rocks/ledges on the way up, melted on the return
- Saw a total on 10 people, some of which were going over to Abraham as well. That must have been a good beating.
- CrazyBob translated into Spanish is "Roberto Loco". Petch translated into Spanish is "Gringo with Flamingo"
Some Pics:
