Here's a good summary of Henry Clay's career. Oakes probably named the peak after him somewhere in the early to mid-1800's, as that was when he would have had the most impact on public life. It's clearly not early 1700's as neither Oakes nor Clay were born then.

While the NH legislature can name peaks after whoever they want, I think the USGS will likely reject the rename as Reagan has no significant connection to the Presidential Range or NH in general. At least that is what I hope will happen. Either way, with a naming as politically charged as this one, the name Clay won't be going away any time soon.

Is that on RT-3 just off RT93? Have you ever climbed it? I drive by it all the time.
I've climbed it. There is a small cliff that is obvious from Rte. 3 when wet, I call it the Mt Cleveland Scenic Vista Vista as from its top you can see all the sightseers parked on Route 3 :)

Don't forget Johnson in the Ossipee Range. You'll have to do it twice. One for Andrew Johnson and once for LBJ!

Also, stong cases can be made for Franklin (D. Roosevelt), Jim (James Polk) and (Tricky) Dickey ;) Keep in mind too that many presidents have been Hix or Bald Knobs! :p

The Carter range was named after an early settler, not Jimmy Carter. Mt. Hayes was also named for an early settler.

This post will probably get zapped for being too political but... God help us if we ever have a Mt. Bush (as in George W.) but how about a Mt. Roosevelt (as in Theodore Roosevelt) what President did more for our National Forests than him?

I thought Carter was named after a doctor who explored the area looking for botanicals. Hight was his companion.

From MWO:
The Carter Range, including Carter Dome and North, Middle, and South Carter, bore those names long before Jimmy Carter occupied the White House. The Carter after whom the Range is named is obscure; some say he was a local hunter, others a doctor seeking medicinal plants.

Not sure about Hight.

(at the risk of continuing this thread down a slippery slope) Well, if I were to vote for a name change, it would be for Joe Dodge, Bob Monahan (cofounders of the Mt Washington Observatory, among many other things), both deceased, or Brad Washburn for his mountaineering & mapping accomplishments.

But I'd rather keep mountains & other natural features the way they are.
