If I’m coming from the south on Rt.93 which is the better route to York Pond Rd?

Routes 93 > 3 > 115 > 2 > 16 > 110

Routes 93 > 142 > 3 > 110

or even
Routes 93 > 135 > 3 > 110

(any estimate of driving time from Exit 20 on Rt.93)

I’m comparing it with coming all the way up Rt. 16.

Routes 93 > 3 > 115 > 2 > 16 > 110 is what I usually take. The other routes take you around the Kilkenny area and come in from the North. It's usually about 15 minutes longer if I recall correctly.

From exit 20, I would guess you are looking at a bit under 2 hours. Please note as Rte. 110 winds through Berlin, it does get a bit tricky as you are literally driving through the middle of the city and residential areas. However, if you pay attention to the signs you should be OK.

Are you coming up from the southern part of the state where you need to ride up Rte. 16? Depending on the origin of your ride, I would think the 93 route would be best.

Any way you go is roundabout as you know. I'd rule out the 93>135 option; 135 is slow, and this most roundabout route would be the best only if 135 were fast. 93>142 is the second best option, but still slower than 93>3>115>2>16>110.

From Franconia to the 2-16 junction in Gorham takes me under an hour, say 50-55 minutes. It's another, what, 12 miles beyond that to the YP Road, so add 20-30 more minutes, given traffic and dirt road. Conservatively, 1.5 hours would be my best guess on the 93>3 route. I never use the Exit 20 route to get up to there so can't help on that one. Depending on when you're going, any route that avoids N. Conway is likely to be faster. Even West Side road seems busy this summer.

Hopefully they've replaced the sign on 110, last year it was missing and we missed the left turn in the residential areas. The 93 route Dug mentions is the best one IMO.

Another question

Thanks everyone. Piecing together the options and time it looks like Rt. 16 is better at least in the morning. But I have a better idea if I want an alternate route for the return. I am almost equal distance between Rt.93 and Rt.16.

Another question: Delorme maps have ‘Green’ street in Berlin as being the same as Rt. 110. If the Rt. 110 sign is not there does anyone know if Green St. sign is?

I can't recall ever seeing a Green St. sign, but never looked, either. My in-laws live right off the route, and I've never noticed the 110 sign missing before. It's always been there whenever I've been up there (but I don't disagree with Jim L, just that it's always been there when I've been there).

Jim Lombard: That sign has been missing for years! I just know where to turn so I didn't make the same mistake the second time in 2002. I got totally lost in Berlin, NH and wandered way north maybe 5 miles or so on NH 16 before saying this ain't right in 1993.

Here is how I can best describe it. As you enter into Berlin center, you will go left at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles (Main St. goes straight). Passing the Berlin City Bank on the right, you'll come to a stop light with Dunkin' Donuts on the left (with the world's worst customer service....).

Go straight through the lights, pass an Irving gas station on the right (usually remarkably cheap gas). Pass under a railroad bridge, pass the Police Department on the left, and get to a T. The traffic flow will basically force you right, and follow that. Take your 2nd left (where 110 starts. I have never not seen the sign, and I've been going up there about once a month for 15 years).

Follow for a block, come to a stop sign, and go right. You should be staring right at the cliffs on Mt. Forist (or as the locals call it, Elephant Mtn. for obvious reasons) From here, you're basically out of the city and smooth sailing from there.

There are two opportunities to mess up. The first is in the center of Berlin. If you end up on Main St., this will take you up Rte.16. No real reason to panic, as you can still take Milan Hill Rd. or Rte. 110-B, which take you to Rte. 110 about three miles north of the Hatchery Rd. These are both 10+ miles outside of the city.

The second is the left where 110 starts. If you miss that one, you'll come to the hockey rink on the right. You went too far, turn around and back track about 100 yards and you'll see the sign. The problem with the sign is that it is close to a building and tough to see from where you will be coming from. It is more visible when backtracking.

As an update I wanted to thank all for their input, I even printed out 'dug's directions but in the end it was a breeze as there are Rt.110 signs right from the split with Rt.16 and at every turn. It was just as easy on my way back to Rt.16. These may be new signs or I just was looking in the right direction. :)

(PS - I forgot all about the gate and my heart dropped when I saw the sign that said it opened at 8 am [I was early] . But the gate was open and another hiker told me it wouldn't be shut until 10 pm.)
