Thanks Steppinwolf and Doug for all the great info and links. After thinking about getting a gps for the past several months, I just ordered the Garmin 60CS, and the external antenna Doug mentioned. This is what makes this such a great site!

Happy to help.

I have the same--a good combo. Now you get to learn how to use them...

You will also need software to get the max out of the GPS. Only Garmin software will load maps into the GPS.
* US Topo (100K topo maps for the entire US)
* US Topo 24K (East, West, or Central) (24K topos for selected areas)
* you may also want road maps (Metroguide, City Select, or City Navigator)

Many also find third party mapping products useful (cannot load maps into the GPS). National Geographic TOPO! and Maptech Terrain Navigator have the best reputations.

You can find a better price than those I believe. Try GPSCity.com or gpsstore.
Gpscity has the cs for $397.

The CS has a vertical trip computer which the C doesn't. Nice for hikers. Not much vertical data with the C at all. As well as accuracy with altitude over just satellite computed elevations. Most of Garmin barometer sensor units have a vertical trip computer.

The color screen is the best thing going on these. You can read them in bright sunlight, dim light,no light ,etc. Plus they compute much better than other models. Longer battery life, bright screen light for dim and dark conditions.

If you need to off load it they will command a good price on EBAY.

Do your home work and read about them to compare. But if your in a hurry just get the CS you can't go wrong.

Good luck
