Rainbow on Cedar Lakes

Taken from the Beaver Pond Outlet Lean-to (second lean-to on Cedar Lakes) in the West Canada Lakes Wilderness Area in the Adirondacks during a rain storm last summer:

You can't see it in the picture, but the rainbow was so intense that you could actually see a third rainbow above the other two. The way the rain and sun lined up with each other was perfect for viewing the rainbow over the lake from the lean-to.

Nice Shot. My only critique is that I would like to have seen the top of the second rainbow as well. I still love the shot.

It was stitched together from 4 different photos.

It is a wonderful image.

The standard double rainbow arcs occur at approximately 42 and 51 degree arcs around the antisolar point (which is below the horizon during daylight). At midday these arcs would be entirely below the horizon. So you only see normal rainbows in the early portions of morning and later portions of afternoon. An exception might be looking down onto a waterfall from a high vantage point.

That web link does also discusses "Higher Order Bows" (3-5). Perhaps that is what you were seeing in the third arc.

Beautiful scene, beautiful rainbow, and nice job stitching together the panoramic view.

One thing you might want to try, if you have the software, is to darken the photo just a bit, while increasing its contrast to boost the intensity of the rainbow.

The following web page provides a great deal of information about rainbows. One thing it brings home is how “just right” your viewing position has to be in order to see (and photograph) the bow.
