Spring has sprung! I was excited to go hiking up to a new moose yard I found back in January on the northern slopes of the Sandwich Range. On the way I took this picture of Painted Walls. I think this is so pretty during melt, the only time when these brooks flow down the cliffs...
The hardwood buds are finally exploding. The maple buds are all over the forest floor right now...
I saw this nice mushroom growing on a downed hemlock...
The forest is incredible on a rainy May day. It was so nice to be out there. I stopped for chocolate and just smelled and looked and listened. I heard a crunch off in a direction I wasn't planning on, but...
It was a mama and her yearling bull calf. At least I think it's a bull. I didn't see any antler buds, but the face looks like a bull, with a dark snout...
Mama is on the slight side. I think she's young herself...
I hung out with them for over an hour, observing all I could while they grazed. Then I was on my way back toward the yard. I came upon a scene that tells a tale of life in the forest...
A poor deer had been taken down for dinner, probably coyotes judging by the scat on the scene. I can sit and wonder at such sights forever, imagining the events. Life is prescious.
A snail left its' shell in a little stream. I put it on a mossy rock for a nice picture...
I finally made it up to the yard. The hobblebush in this area has been heavily browsed for many years. This is a classic yard, a birch stand with scattered spruce and fir, and lots of hobblebush understory, with some striped maple and lots of ferns on the floor.
Here, the hobblebush is just budding out and a few leaves were just starting to open. Back in January, the moose sign was extremely heavy, with fresh tracks and beds and rubs...
