New guidebooks (or editions) from Mike Dickerman's June 8th column in the Littleton NH Courier. The RP's panoramic view sketches are a great idea, like combining Scudder's with a guidebook although Sappington's "works of art" sound more elaborate than Scudder's line drawings.

"In the guidebook area, the most exciting new entry is the forthcoming new eighth edition of the venerable Randolph Paths guide to the Randolph Valley and the Northern Peaks of the Presidential Range. Set to be published by July 4, the new Randolph Paths guide has been substantially updated and expanded by a dedicated team of volunteers from the Randolph Mountain Club (RMC), the publisher of the book.

New features in the guide are an expanded history of the RMC trail system, an expanded "Points of Interest" section, descriptions for RMC's new footpaths in the Randolph Community Forest and elsewhere, and much added information on Leave No Trace guidelines, search and rescue, winter hiking and backcountry skiing, and ice climbing.

Along with the new RMC guide will be a newly updated tyvek trail map by volunteer cartographer Jon Hall. Another new feature of the map, which will also be sold separately from the guide, are four, large-scale panoramic view sketches from various places along RMC's trails. These view sketches, drawn by Randolph artist Tim Sappington, are true works of art and include text identifying distant peaks seen from each vantage point. The sketches will be found on the reverse side of the map.

Another interesting new addition to the White Mountain guidebook field will be this summer's "Old Codger's Guide to Hiking and Climbing in the White Mountains." This handy new guide, set for a late June release, is the first and only guidebook geared specifically for older hikers. Written by the Old Codger himself—a part-time Bretton Woods resident—the guide is chock full of useful information on trip planning and preparation, many photographs, and a separate section listing 15 recommended hikes suitable for senior citizen hikers. The Old Codger's guide is being published by Littleton-based Bondcliff Books."
