I was afraid to step in it because it looked like, well ….
But looking closer I saw it was a plant. It is actually quite stiff and you can see three stems each having dried flower heads along them. A bit of searching revealed it is ‘squawroot’ which is mentioned elsewhere on this forum as being ‘rare in NH but not in ME’. I was in NH.

sweet! Conopholis americana! (vies for "ugliest plant" in my book w/ a few others like jimsonweed and curly dock)

if it's on public land or you can get permission from the landowner, give the folks at NH Natural Heritage Bureau a ring + let them know where it is.

Very cool! I wonder if I've ever passed this over, thinking it was the stool of a critter that ate pine cones. Good eye, Carol! Thanks for posting.

Actually, this is from the side. The stems are not laying on the ground but are upright with the one on the right curved over.
