Rare species


I was afraid to step in it because it looked like, well ….
But looking closer I saw it was a plant. It is actually quite stiff and you can see three stems each having dried flower heads along them. A bit of searching revealed it is ‘squawroot’ which is mentioned elsewhere on this forum as being ‘rare in NH but not in ME’. I was in NH.
 
Very cool! I wonder if I've ever passed this over, thinking it was the stool of a critter that ate pine cones. Good eye, Carol! Thanks for posting.

Actually, this is from the side. The stems are not laying on the ground but are upright with the one on the right curved over.
