Hi --

So, my son Elmore (almost 6) and I would like to get out for a quick overnight next week. He did a bunch of backpacking last year, but this will be his first time hauling a frame pack with his own sleeping stuff. Basically we'd like something generally snow-free and comparatively easy, mileage in the 3 - 5 per day range. We were thinking maybe up the Pemi east side to the Cedar Brook area & back out (which was a nice overnight under similar circumstances with his sister two years ago) but we're open to suggestions. Maybe there's something cool out there that we don't know about.

Whatcha got that's within 2 hours or so of the NEK?

Thanks --

Matt

Coppermine Trail! Nice river to walk beside. Easy terrain. A lean-to at the end! Go for it!

Love his name! Is he named for Elmore Leonard?

Thanks.

Complex set of references, this name. Elmore James (the guitarist); Elmore Leonard (the author); the grand old Elm in the yard of my childhood home; Morton (my grandfather), and nearby (and beautiful) Lake Elmore, Elmore Mountain, and the eponymous town.

Three Ponds--there is a shelter.

Rocky Branch Tr from the south (Jericho Rd) to the first shelter (also has tent platforms). Includes the option of hiking Stairs Mtn, although snow might be a problem.

Three Ponds is lovely, when its dry, but after this week's rain its likely to be good and muddy... Which my 6 year old would adore, but I'm not sure I'd want to share sleeping space with her afterwards :)

Might be a bit far south for you, but a few years back I did an in-and-out of Smarts Brook. Very flat and pretty woods until the climb up to the ridge of Sandwich (which I presume you wouldn't want anyhow.) Reasonably open woods so you should be able to find a spot, follows a brook the whole way so water's not too far of a walk.
