Maine Avatar: We could use some snow around here
Howdy everyone,

I need some help. I have a friend who wants to plan a weekend getaway for a bunch of gals. They want a cabin on a lake in August within 2 hours of NYC.

Can't say I know many options, but I suspect many of you will be able to throw out some suggestions.

links to websites and phone numbers would be awesome!

thanks in advance,

spencer

Try Nockamixon State Park in the PA state park system. It's in Quakertown, Bucks County PA, just west of the Delaware River and north of Philadelphia. Depending on traffic, you could probably make it across to NYC in under 2 hours. There are ten "modern" log cabins there, i.e., drive-ins with electricity, running water, bunks and mattresses, full bathroom, kitchen (frig), everything except plates and silverware, linens, pillows, towels. Some sleep 6, some 8. I've stayed there in the winter so have not used the large lake in the park. It was very pleasant and unused in December. The price is good. I suspect it fills up fast in the summer. If they are hikers, the Poconos and Del Water Gap are 1-2 hours north. Here's the link

Lake Wallenpaupack in PA (it's not as nice as Lake George, but it's closer.)
Any other parameters, like access to other activities ?

There are cabins on Sebago Lake in Harriman... Hiking galore, Kayaking in the lake, (road)cycling in harriman are great! Let's see, you've got the Long Path, the AT, Bear Mtn, Perkin's tower. 7 lakes to kayak in... Even a triathlon loop...

Harriman is in Orange/Rockland County which is easily 2 hours from NYC. They also have campsites and a bunch of Outward Bound camps there as well as the ACA has a canoe camp on Sebago.

Also, check out the cabins at Stokes State Forest up near High Point, they have cabins to rent although they fill up very very fast. There are a couple of cabins near the High Point Monument on Steeny Kill Lake but they too fill up way too fast I think for general use.

Try Atsion State Park

Whoa, Waumbek, you're showing pretty impressive range for a Franconia Notch-based hiker. My beef with Nockamixon is that it has only a pool and swimming is banned in the reservoir that the park abuts. You can put a oily, milfoil-laden boat in the drinking supply but not your toes.
Another suggestion is Atsion Recreation area in the New Jersey Pinelands, right off Route 206. There is a big cedar lake on the Mullica River with a public swimming area on the opposite shore. If you rent a cabin, you have your side of the lake to yourself. The cabins look really nice.
You can rent canoes and take a trip down the beautiful Mullica River and there are plenty of other recreational opportunities. Atlantic City is about an hour away for evening entertainment.
You make reservations directly through the rangers: 609-268-0444 (Atsion),
I've been meaning to do this for years but always wind up going to New England.

This won't help if they're looking for their own cabin but if they want want similar to a self service hut experience then they might consider Goose Pond cabin on the AT in the Berkshires. It is a couple miles hike in from Becket and from the other direction as well. We used it as a basecamp one Columbus Day weekend and would hike out, drive to another hike and hike back in at night. Cooked some of our dinners there, ate some at restuarants.

I used to live 10 mins from Nockamixon and it was my favorite close place to paddle. While I wasn't happy with their policies, in the greatest form of respect to Ed Abby, I always enjoyed plenty of swimming in the Lake - Especially on the south side by the old trails - Plenty of places to dip a toe where no one ever really visits.

Also, one of my favorite things to do in hot weather was to "fall out of my kayak" and take a reasonably long (read 45 minutes) and splashingly great time to get back in.

Seriously the cabins are nice and there are trails for hiking and biking as well as boat rentals. Midweek is usually pretty quiet, but weekends are extremely active. Also Haycock Mountain (highest point in Bucks County) has a couple of trails and great bouldering spots. It abuts the North side of the lake.

Cheers
Rick

I'd be careful of the Harriman cabins... looked into some of them a few years back just to see what they were like... utter holes, dark, damp, cramped, furnishings looked like they were picked up from the curbside on bulky trash day.

There are a few cabins at the AMC camp near the Del Water Gap. Definite step up from Harriman, nice lake, can get crowded.

NJ State park cabins have had some substantial upgrades in recent years, & can be quite nice but VERY difficult to get.

For more info, click -here- for the link to the AMC Mohican Outdoor Center. It's less than 2 miles from my house. Lots of great trails in the area, including the Appalachian Trail. Email or PM me if you want more info on the area. (It's about 1.5 hours from NYC.)

Mohican center?

There was a fairly emphatic thread about a year ago either on this board or AMC's Hiker Journal about a very terrible experience with the Mohican Outdoor Center's cabins... I'll see if I can find it. Maybe they've been cleaned up/renovated since, though.

Here it is- found it:

Might want to call ahead if you're considering this one. Good luck!

Not a lake but a beautiful waterfall is nearby and it is two hours north of NYC. It is in Copake Falls State Park and it is just off NY 22 north of MIllerton. Bash Bish Falls is just a mile upstream. Might be hard to get a weekend reservation without sufficient advance reservation. I stayed there on an AMC camping trip and it was decent in 1990. Graet hiking nearby up to Allander, Brace & Frissell in the South Taconics.
